Mark Ruffalo Caught on Spider-Man: Brand New Day Set Looking Different Than Expected

Mark Ruffalo is confirmed to appear in the next installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He was recently seen on set, but in an unexpected way that surprised fans.

A fan account, @UnBoxPHD, recently shared the first photos of Mark Ruffalo on the set of the upcoming film in London. He was wearing a large green coat, probably to stay warm between shots, but also potentially to hide his costume. Notably, Ruffalo didn’t appear to have any motion capture markers on his face, hinting that he’ll be playing Bruce Banner in his human form for this scene. This is a change from his recent appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he’s mostly been playing the merged form of Bruce Banner and the Hulk – known as Smart Hulk – since Avengers: Endgame.

Mark Ruffalo played Bruce Banner in both Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, but She-Hulk explained he was only human to recover from an arm injury sustained during the events of Endgame when he brought everyone back after Thanos’ snap. Since the new film, Brand New Day, takes place years later, it’s currently unknown why Banner would be human again, though there’s speculation that the classic “Savage Hulk” persona will reappear.

The Hulk Is the Latest Avenger to Appear in a Spider-Man Movie

Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk is the newest Marvel character to show up in the Spider-Man movies set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ever since Sony and Marvel Studios teamed up to include Spider-Man in the shared universe, each of his solo films has featured a prominent Marvel character alongside Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Homecoming (2017) included Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man (with a brief appearance by Chris Evans as Captain America), and Far From Home (2019) featured Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill. But No Way Home (2021) really raised the stakes, bringing back Tobey Maguire, and also included Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Benedict Wong as Wong, and Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock.

The upcoming film, Brand New Day, will continue the trend of team-ups seen in No Way Home by bringing Spider-Man (Tom Holland) together with the Punisher, marking the vigilante’s first big-screen appearance since Punisher War Zone in 2008, which starred the late Ray Stevenson. Recent set pictures strongly suggest Sadie Sink will play a significant role, as she’s been a key character in the Punisher’s comic book stories since 2011. With Marvin Jones III cast as the crime boss Tombstone and rumors pointing to Liza Colón-Zayas as Jean DeWolff, Brand New Day appears poised to introduce several important characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Destin Daniel Cretton’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day is coming to theaters on July 31, 2026.
