Mark Harmon has recently shared his thoughts on potentially returning to his iconic role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in NCIS. For nearly 20 years, he was the face of the popular CBS show. When he left during season 19, fans were worried about the show’s future. Now, after four years, he’s set to make a guest appearance in a special crossover event between NCIS and the new series, NCIS: Origins.
Mark Harmon will return to the NCIS universe for the NCIS: Origins prequel event, but currently, his appearance is limited to that show. He’s also narrating the series, much like Jim Parsons did on Young Sheldon. This marks the first time he’ll be seen on screen as part of this return, as previously he only provided voice-over work.
Mark Harmon’s possible full-time return as Gibbs to NCIS is still being discussed. In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Harmon jokingly suggested that it would take a lot of fan requests to make it happen, saying, “I think they gotta write letters.” He seemed to imply a fan-led campaign might be necessary to convince the show to bring him back permanently.
Mark Harmon chose to leave NCIS in 2021 after nearly two decades playing a main character. Shooting episodes for traditional network TV shows like NCIS is particularly demanding, as they produce a large number of episodes each year. While many fans were sad to see his character, Gibbs, retire to Alaska, his choice felt earned after a lifetime of service. It’s therefore surprising, and encouraging, that Harmon is now considering a return.
It’s uncertain if Mark Harmon will return to NCIS as a series regular, and it’s unlikely to happen in season 23. CBS has been focused on establishing Alden Parker, played by Gary Cole, as the new team leader. Bringing Harmon back into a central role would create more upheaval for the team and potentially hurt the show’s efforts to improve its ratings, making it a risky decision right now.
Ideally, Gibbs would return to the NCIS universe as a guest star. While he’s currently only mentioned briefly, occasional appearances – a few times a year – wouldn’t overshadow the current team’s investigations. It’s also crucial he shows up for important milestones, especially after missing the 1000th episode and Ducky’s farewell. This would allow CBS to keep Gibbs relevant while still building a strong future for Parker and his team.
