In Invincible Season 3 Episode 4, the narrative splits into two distinct parts: Mark and Eve embark on their initial authentic date, but Mark’s focus shifts when he receives a call for a mission to the future. Meanwhile, Omni-Man and Allen join forces in an attempt to escape from the Viltrumite prison.
The initial three episodes of Invincible’s third season played a significant role in various aspects: Mark ended his relationship with Cecil upon learning about his collaboration with Darkwing II and the ReAnimen; he acquired a new blue outfit; Oliver took the lives of the Mauler Twins; and at long last, Mark and Eve formed a romantic bond.
Based on Amazon’s episode titles and some leaked cast details, it seems we have a fairly clear picture of what lies ahead. To put it simply, Mark appears to be heading towards a battle unlike any he’s encountered before.
Despite continually facing obstacles, the boy finally receives some well-deserved recognition – starting from Episode 4, where he is acknowledged for his selfless actions, albeit painful ones, in assisting Dropkick and Fightmaster.
Mark confronts Cecil about the red orb
Prior to connecting with Mark and Eve, we find Rex out shopping with Rae at the grocery store instead. He’s content subsisting on ramen, pizza, and black coffee, but given her background of an “engineered diet,” she longs for the familiarity of preparing a home-cooked meal.
She snaps at him, saying, “You can choose between assisting or leaving,” but instead of complying, he springs into action… until an unexpected event forces them to halt their tasks and confront a destructive creature wreaking havoc on the city streets.
While Robot (and Rudy, who makes Amanda uneasy) works on identifying the creator of the orb that’s been spying on Mark, Debbie, and Oliver, they discover that the orb is too damaged to determine its builder. However, it’s clear that it’s from Earth and incredibly advanced, suggesting that whoever constructed this has a substantial amount of resources at their disposal.
Immediately, Mark assumes Cecil is responsible, leading him to storm the Pentagon and destroy numerous ReAnimen without hesitation. When Cecil pushes his red button, he questions Mark, “Why are you here, Mark? Apart from costing millions of dollars in taxpayer money and attacking a government building, what’s your purpose?
Nevertheless, Cecil insists he has no connection to the orb, and off he goes. “Boy, that was quite a frightening beginning to my day,” he remarks. Interestingly enough, it turns out he was being truthful, but his curiosity is piqued about who created the orb.
Mark and Eve’s date is interrupted
On this occasion, Mark travels to the city of love, Paris, for what he considers his second initial date with Eve. As they’re on the brink of a romantic moment, suddenly a doorways appears beside their table, and out come Dropkick and Fightmaster.
They urgently request your immediate presence. It’s a matter of life or death, with no time for explanations,” they stress, adding that they took the Declaration of Independence because they believed it was crucial for their future needs.
In a humble plea, I find myself reaching out to you, dear Mark. Previously, I’ve had the privilege of your acquaintance, and since then, the tales surrounding you have captivated us all. Upon reflection, it’s become apparent that these stories are not mere myths; they hold a grain of truth in them. You, Mark, stand out as the one among us with the strength required for a noble cause. We urgently need your assistance in our quest to overthrow our ruler.
As per Dropkick and Fightmaster’s explanation, they can make a single journey back in time. If Mark does not join them immediately, their chances of returning are slim. However, he refuses, so they forcibly take him through the portal regardless.
Mark meets King Immortal
In this imagined future, prolonged conflicts for hundreds of years have left many urban areas in ruins. Citizens are compelled to work at labor camps, bear witness to public punishments, or remain indoors under extended lockdowns.
This version aims to provide a more natural and easy-to-understand rephrasing of the original sentence while maintaining its essence.
The twins describe how one individual became Earth’s ruler at a time when the planet was teetering on the edge of destruction. “For a while, he ruled effectively… according to tales, his intellect functioned more optimally during that period. Yet, something altered. Exactly what occurred isn’t clear… but gradually, he fell into madness,” they recount.
This enigmatic ruler annihilated ten significant cities merely because they defied him – yet unintentionally kindled the flames of rebellion. Dropkick and Fightmaster subsequently disclose their reasoning behind constructing a time machine: to seek remedies in history, including employing the ink from the Declaration of Independence to slay the king (this tactic failed).
This secretive monarch demolished ten major cities only because they refused him – however, he unwittingly incited a rebellion. Dropkick and Fightmaster later reveal their motivation for creating a time machine: to discover cures in the past, which included using ink from the Declaration of Independence to assassinate the king (this idea didn’t work out).
Mark queries about his Viltrumite identity, yet they’re unfamiliar with the term. He offers assistance, only to be captured by the royal guard moments later. In a quick succession, Mark engages in combat with some of them, but the twins express their desire for arrest, stating it’s the fastest route to meet the king. They implore, “Halt the king, we can handle ourselves,” propelling Mark towards an elevator encounter with him.
He steps out, and he can’t believe his eyes: the king… is the Immortal.
The Immortal asks Mark to kill him
Here are the crucial points from what the Immortal said, as they carry significant weight: I’ll jot down essential excerpts from our conversation.
- “It’s been so many years since you left with your family, I wasn’t sure I’d recognize you.”
- “You look thin, weak… have you been sick again? I thought they found a cure.”
- “You left me no choice, it was the only way to bring you back. I didn’t want to do it, I had to force your hand.”
- “I’m not a Viltrumite, you shouldn’t have left me in charge. You’re the Emperor, you should have known it was too much for me, especially after so long.”
- “All of this is your fault. I didn’t want the repsonsibility, I was tired and ready to move on… I told you that, but you said I was the only one you trusted.”
- “The man you remember is dead, but I didn’t receive that privilege.”
- “Kate? I don’t know that name. Is that the red-haired woman? I’ve had hundreds of wives, I’ve outlived everyone I’ve ever loved.”
- “Your family could endure. You need to repay the debt you owe me, whether you want to or not, that’s why I set all this in motion.”
- “You left me here. You made me into a monster. How many more must die because of your mistakes?”
The Immortal makes a special plea to Mark. He wants Mark to end his eternal life by taking it from him. He can’t do it himself because he sees suicide as the way out for the weak. He appeals to Mark, saying they were once friends, and after a heart-wrenching argument, Mark carries out his request, brutally separating his head from his body.
As soon as the royal guards make their appearance, they verify that power has now been handed over to the populace. Meanwhile, Dropkick and Fightmaster transport Mark back to his original timeframe.
Mark and Eve finally sleep together
Mark describes upcoming events he’ll experience. Despite not yet committing any wrongdoings, he harbors guilt. “Your future self isn’t you anymore,” Eve remarks, and she’s correct: the Immortal intended to end his existence, so Mark shouldn’t carry that burden of guilt.
On their journey back, they transport the Declaration of Independence while taking in the scenic views of both American and global landmarks. During this flight, Mark expresses his affection for her, to which she reciprocates her love!
They get back to the house, and after Eve uses her powers to remove their clothes, they… you know.
Allen and Nolan break out of prison (with Battle Beast)
The scene shifts focus, providing Mark and Eve with solitude, while we transition to Allen the Alien and Nolan confined within the Viltrumite prison. A brief summary of their journey leading up to this incarceration is provided. Importantly, Allen holds onto hope that Nolan can change, whereas Nolan feels he’s earned a death sentence for his misdeeds.
In a different phrasing: “Nolan states that he doesn’t align with anyone, not even himself. He admits to disgracing his community, betraying his family, abandoning his sons, and committing wrongs against those he values most,” Allen advises him to rectify the situation. However, Nolan replies in the negative.
They hit a dead end in their situation… until the day of Nolan’s execution. Following his transfer by two Viltrumite soldiers (and receiving a severe beating), Allen breaks free from his cell and mobilizes the group – essentially, his fellow detainees, including Battle Beast (Allen guarantees him opponents fitting for his power).
While overpowering the prison’s security personnel, one of the Viltrumites turns to Nolan and queries, “Did your treachery justify your own demise?” To which Nolan responds, “Indeed, and it’s a pity you’ll never grasp why.
In a grim turn of events, Allen and Battle Beast locate the execution chamber, triggering a gruesome battle. Battle Beast manages to capture one Viltrumite while Allen seizes another. Meanwhile, Allen endures a fierce assault, leaving Nolan appalled – this harrowing spectacle motivates him to defy his restraints and stand up against his own kind.
Omni-Man reveals the truth of the Viltrumites
Allen creates an opening in the vessel, shifting the battle into outer space. Together, Allen and Nolan deliver a powerful double-punch to the Viltrumite’s skull, causing it to shatter like a watermelon and eliminating it instantly. Simultaneously, Battle Beast engages in combat with another Viltrumite Soldier, gradually drifting away.
Allen makes another plea for Nolan to join the coalition, especially after he saved his life.
Meanwhile, Nolan surprises everyone with a stunning revelation. Despite Allen’s concerns about further Viltrumite attacks, Nolan assures them that no others will arrive.
In simpler terms, “The number of genuine Viltrumites remaining across the cosmos has significantly decreased. This piece of information is fiercely protected by the Empire. It’s also a key factor as to why we stand a chance against them.
After that point, let’s revisit Mark and Eve. You can guess what happens next. Debbie comes knocking and inquires about the locked door. He explains he’s feeling tired and is currently without any clothing. “It’s time we move out on our own,” he whispers to Eve.
