A Super Mario 64 player who holds five world records is offering an $8,000 reward to anyone who can beat his high scores. He’s hoping this will encourage others to challenge his records in the classic game.
I can’t believe it, but since 2024, one person – a speedrunner called Suigi – has completely dominated Super Mario 64! They currently hold all five world records for the game, which is just incredible to watch.
Players used to compete for the best times in different Super Mario 64 categories, like completing the game with 120, 70, 16, 1, or 0 stars. But Suigi has held the world record in all of these categories for over a year, and no one has been able to beat them.
Speedrunner offers $8,000 bounty to break his own world records
GamesRadar+ noticed a video posted on YouTube where a runner challenged others to beat his record and end his winning streak.
The community is feeling stagnant and needs something new to energize them. We’re hoping a great new release will finally overcome the current losing streak. Honestly, it’s become repetitive and predictable, and I think everyone feels that way.
To encourage competition, Suigi announced he’ll award $1,000 to anyone who breaks one of the five existing records. He’s also accepting community donations to increase the current prize pool, which totals $7,944.
To qualify, speedruns must be completed on a genuine Nintendo 64 and officially verified on the leaderboards.
He encouraged his fellow speedrunners, saying the current records weren’t impossible to beat. He explained that the biggest challenge was overcoming a mental block.
Since the video was uploaded, Suigi has surprisingly surpassed his previous best time in the 70 Star category, improving by another two seconds! Fortunately, he’s choosing not to take the reward money, so the challenge and its prize are still up for grabs.
While most records are only a few seconds faster than the next best time, that’s a significant margin in speedrunning. The current record holder believes the times are still achievable, so it will be interesting to see if anyone can beat them and win.
