Yesterday’s Developer Direct 2025 offered a glimpse into what we can expect this year. Among the exciting new titles unveiled were Clair Obscur Expedition 33, South of Midnight, and the next installment in the Ninja Gaiden series. However, it was primarily the release date of Doom: The Dark Ages that had everyone eagerly waiting.
Old GPUs are DOOMED
As a dedicated enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement for the impending arrival of “Doom: The Dark Ages” on May 15, 2025! Prepare your wallets, as this epic game will set you back $69.99 for the standard version and a cool $99.99 for the premium edition. But Seems like it’s time to start saving up for some upgrades, because this season ain’t going anywhere!
After catching a glimpse of the trailer, I’m ready to rock out! However, before we get started, let’s take a look at our requirements:
Minimum system requirements (1080P/60 FPS/ Low video settings)
- CPU: AMD Zen 2 or Intel 10th Generation CPU @3.2Ghz with 8 cores / 16 threads or better (examples: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or better, or Intel Core i7 10700K or better).
- GPU: NVIDIA or AMD hardware Raytracing-capable GPU with 8GB dedicated VRAM or better (examples: NVIDIA RTX 2060 SUPER or better, AMD RX 6600 or better).
- System RAM: 16 GB.
Recommended system requirements (1440/60 FPS/ High video settings)
- CPU: AMD Zen 3 or Intel 12th Generation CPU @3.2Ghz with 8 cores / 16 threads or better (examples: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X or better, or Intel Core i7 12700K or better).
- GPU: NVIDIA or AMD hardware Raytracing-capable GPU with 10GB dedicated VRAM or better (examples: NVIDIA RTX 3080 or better, AMD RX 6800 or better).
- System RAM: 32 GB.
Ultra 4K system requirements (2160/60 FPS/ Ultra video settings)
- CPU: AMD Zen 3 or Intel 12th Generation CPU @3.2Ghz with 8 cores / 16 threads or better (examples: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X or better, or Intel Core i7 12700K or better).
- GPU: NVIDIA or AMD hardware Raytracing capable GPU with 16GB dedicated VRAM or better (examples: NVIDIA RTX 4080 or better, AMD RX 7900XT or better).
- System RAM: 32 GB.
To put it simply, a GPU capable of ray tracing and an 8-core CPU are essential for a smooth gaming experience. However, gamers with older computers may find it difficult to meet these requirements, and laptop users with limited VRAM might face challenges. This situation is similar to Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, where GeForce GTX cards can no longer handle modern games due to their age. Moreover, forced ray tracing technology is on the rise, making it even more challenging for older hardware. You may be curious about why this is the case, but the reason is that modern games are becoming increasingly demanding in terms of graphics processing power and ray tracing capabilities.
In other words, we are transitioning from Xbox One and PlayStation 4, as the current generation of consoles that support ray tracing is emerging as the norm. This shift allows developers to streamline their work by not having to handle different lighting systems because ray tracing is now a standard feature.
