Man sues casino after waking up in handcuffs with $75k debt he doesn’t remember

A man is taking legal action against Aria Resort Casino, claiming he woke up in their security office, handcuffed, and was told he owed them $75,000. He has no idea how he ran up such a large debt and doesn’t remember what happened.

Michael Thomson, a 64-year-old lawyer who frequently played Aria’s blackjack tables, remembers leaving the high-limit room on January 23, 2024, with several thousand dollars worth of chips.

He recalls waking up the next morning in a Las Vegas casino’s security office, in handcuffs, and discovering he owed a huge amount of money – tens of thousands of dollars – in gambling debts. He doesn’t remember agreeing to those debts or signing any paperwork.

In a lawsuit filed in Nevada, Thomson says he discovered he owed the casino around $75,000 in eight outstanding markers. He alleges that the casino’s records of his borrowing, wins, and losses didn’t match up.

According to a lawsuit reported by The Independent, Thomson was unable to function properly that night, and the signatures on some of the items appear to only vaguely match his handwriting.

Lawsuit claims negligent handling

Mr. Thomson’s lawsuit claims that Aria and MGM Resorts International let him keep gambling even though he was allegedly unable to make sound decisions, and that they failed to safeguard his well-being. He also asserts that they improperly kept money he lost and wrongly pursued legal action to recover the debt.

Thomson was at the Aria Resort Casino in Las Vegas when the incident happened.

The lawsuit claims the agreements shouldn’t be legally binding because of his health at the time they were signed, or that some of the signatures are fake. Mr. Thomson is requesting a jury trial and asking for financial compensation if he wins the case.

So, this guy, Thomson, got in trouble back in November 2024. They charged him with using a fake check and stealing some markers from the casino. Luckily for him, he paid everything back, and the case was dropped in October 2025. Basically, he messed up, but he fixed it and walked away without a criminal record.

Aria and MGM Resorts haven’t publicly responded to the lawsuit, which was filed in December 2025.
