Costco’s famously affordable $1.50 hot dog and soda deal has become incredibly popular, almost like a cultural phenomenon. Recently, a fan in Northern California obtained a truly unique collectible: the actual sign advertising the combo.
Costco’s famous $1.50 hot dog is considered by many to be one of the best food court items ever – it’s a real treat for fans. So, it’s not surprising that someone managed to get their hands on a sign advertising it.
Zack, who considers himself a sign collector, explains that it took a lot of effort and careful planning – several months, in fact – to finally get the managers at Costco to give him the billboard that advertised their famous Kirkland Signature meal deal.
When Costco announced it was changing its fountain drink supplier from Pepsi to Coca-Cola, Zack recognized a potential opportunity.
As a huge fan, I was really bummed to hear they were switching to Coca-Cola late last year, but it actually gave me an idea. I started reaching out to local warehouses, and it took months of asking around. I finally connected with a few General Managers, and I was so relieved when one of them agreed to hold onto some of the old Pepsi stock for me after the changeover. It was a long process, but totally worth it!
That $1.50 deal sign is often called the “Holy Grail” for collectors of Costco items, and Zack says finding it gave him an incredible feeling of excitement.

Costco fuels man’s growing collection obsession
As reported by OutKick, Zack has started collecting discarded items like old signs and menus – basically, anything stores remove and throw away is something he’s interested in.
“This made me feel sure I could get any sign I needed going forward,” he confessed. He then set his sights on In-N-Out. “Signs usually get updated at the end of the year, especially when the minimum wage increases,” he explained.
Currently, the Costco sign is stored in Zack’s garage, protected from the weather. He intends to keep it indefinitely, unless he receives an offer that’s simply irresistible.
“It will be passed down to future generations in the family,” he proclaimed.
The only obstacle might be space… and his wife.
There isn’t a specific limit, but it will become difficult to display them around the house once the garage gets full,” he explained. However, his wife is understanding. “She’d prefer I collect signs over using drugs,” she said.
