Man saved from dog attack after new phone explodes in his pocket

A surprising technical glitch actually helped a Brazilian man survive a dog attack on his commute. What would normally be a frustrating problem ended up saving his life.

On Wednesday, February 18th, mechanic Reinaldo Duarte de Almeida was walking to work when he was unexpectedly attacked by two stray dogs on the sidewalk.

One of the dogs suddenly jumped at Almeida’s neck. He quickly tried to defend himself, and the dog ended up biting his pants pocket—where his phone happened to be.

According to reports, the phone’s battery exploded when the dog bit down on it, causing injuries to both the owner, Almeida, and the dog, and frightening nearby animals.

According to local news, he was taken to the emergency room with burns on his leg and hand. He also needed eight stitches to close a wound from a dog bite.

Almeida has been released from medical care and is recovering well. Although the incident was frightening, he won’t be pursuing legal action against the dog owner. The owner apologized and agreed to cover Almeida’s medical expenses and replace his damaged phone.

I was so relieved to hear the dogs were at least with the owners’ niece after everything happened. The Military Police in Brazil called it neglecting the animals, which honestly, it totally was. I just hope the niece can give them the care they deserve now.

Almeida explained to reporters that despite the risky situation, his phone – which he’d only had for twenty days – ultimately saved him. He described the experience as strange and fortunate.

Although iPhones rarely catch fire on their own, they can explode if the battery is damaged. This happened in one instance when a dog bit an iPhone, puncturing the battery during an attack.

Considering how things unfolded, Almeida couldn’t have done anything to stop the explosion – but surprisingly, it actually ended up saving his life.
