A man is in critical condition after a celebrity chef served him a drink containing liquid nitrogen at a company Christmas party in Moscow, causing a rupture in his stomach.
The incident happened at the Igra Stolov culinary studio during a performance featuring a well-known chef and a “cryo-show.” The show involved cocktails quickly chilled using liquid nitrogen, which is safe for kitchen use but can be very dangerous if someone drinks it before it has completely evaporated.
A chef in Russia used liquid nitrogen to quickly chill drinks, creating a cool, foggy effect. Guests enjoyed the spectacle, filming as the mist flowed over their glasses, and didn’t realize it could be dangerous, according to the news outlet BAZA.
I read that a guest named Sergey, who was 38 years old, was supposedly urged to finish his drink right away. It sounds a little strange, honestly!
So, I saw this crazy video online of a guy drinking from a paper cup, and instantly, this huge cloud of vapor started puffing out of his mouth! He totally freaked out and then collapsed, looking like he was in serious pain. It was pretty shocking to watch.
A man in Moscow suffered a ruptured stomach after being given a liquid nitrogen ‘shot’ as part of a New Year’s cocktail at a corporate event. The chef jokingly said ‘It was nice working with you’ before giving Sergey the drink, which led to him needing urgent hospital treatment and narrowly avoiding a fatal outcome, according to reports.

Celebrity chef’s liquid nitrogen cocktail causes chaos
Honestly, it was scary seeing what happened. Apparently, nobody told the guests about the dangers of the liquid nitrogen drinks, or even warned us to wait for it to disappear before drinking them. Then, poor Sergey just suddenly grabbed his stomach, clearly in terrible pain, and they had to call for help. It was a really frightening situation.
Doctors discovered that the liquid nitrogen quickly expanded within his body, causing his stomach to tear. He immediately underwent emergency surgery and was placed in intensive care. Although he’s now awake and improving, doctors say his condition remains serious.
Liquid nitrogen is extremely cold, boiling at -196°C. At room temperature, it quickly turns into a gas, increasing in size dramatically. If swallowed, this rapid expansion can create dangerous pressure inside the body, potentially causing organs to burst, severe internal bleeding, and even death.
For a long time, experts have cautioned against drinking liquid nitrogen directly. It needs to completely evaporate before it’s safe to use in food or beverages.
