James Gunn and DC Studios are reportedly developing a strong new alien character for the upcoming “Man of Tomorrow” movie. Recent reports share early information about this character’s part in the film and how she could affect the future of the DC Universe.
Maxima reported to make her live-action DCU debut in Man of Tomorrow
Nexus Point News reports that Maxima will be a supporting villain in the upcoming film, Man of Tomorrow. Early casting notices described a tall, strong female character, leading some to believe Wonder Woman might appear. But James Gunn has clarified that the character is actually Maxima.
Maxima, a character created by Roger Stern and George Pérez, debuted in Action Comics #645 in 1989. As the queen of the planet Almerac, she first came to Earth looking for a partner with compatible genetics – specifically, Superman. Although Superman didn’t reciprocate her romantic interest, Maxima eventually became an ally and a member of the Justice League.
The upcoming film, “Man of Tomorrow,” will draw inspiration from the 1992 comic storyline “Panic in the Sky.” In that story, the villain Brainiac takes over the planet Almerac and compels Maxima to help him invade Earth. However, Maxima eventually switches sides, teaming up with Superman and other heroes to defeat Brainiac and his warship, Warworld. The movie will reportedly follow a similar arc, with Maxima starting as a villain before ultimately becoming an ally to the heroes.
Lars Eidinger will play the main villain in the film, Brainiac. David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult are returning as Superman (Clark Kent) and Lex Luthor, respectively. The movie will also star Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl. Milly Alcock is rumored to appear as Supergirl, with John Cena as Peacemaker and Jason Momoa as Lobo also potentially joining the cast.
James Gunn is set to write, direct, and produce the upcoming film, with Peter Safran co-producing. Filming is scheduled to begin in Atlanta in April 2026. Warner Bros. plans to release the movie, titled ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ on July 9, 2027, after the release of ‘Superman’ in 2025 – the first installment of the new DC Universe.
