James Gunn’s DC Universe is rapidly becoming one of the most talked-about new franchises based on comic books, and it’s still early days. Following the huge success of Superman, work has already begun on the next film, Man of Tomorrow.
Now that Aaron Pierre, who will play Green Lantern John Stewart in the new HBO series Lanterns, is also joining the film Man of Tomorrow, fans are buzzing about the possibilities. Many are especially hoping to see a romantic connection develop between Pierre’s character and Hawkgirl, played by Isabela Merced.
Green Lantern and Hawkgirl’s Romance Is Perfect For Fans of the DC Animated Universe
The storyline has become incredibly complicated and confusing, especially when it comes to characters like Hawkgirl, Hawkman, and Hawkwoman. It’s hard to keep track of which version of these characters is being used, and this makes it difficult for new fans to get invested. However, many fans who are now excited about James Gunn’s plans for the DC Universe actually first fell in love with these heroes through animated series like Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.
John Stewart and Hawkgirl (specifically the Shayera Hol version) shared a complex romantic connection in both of those shows. Though their relationship was often tested by alien invasions, hidden truths, and the usual challenges of being superheroes, it became iconic for many fans. Despite not being part of their original comic book backgrounds, a lot of viewers have hoped to see this pairing brought to life in a movie for years.
Given the recent introduction of Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl in Superman, it makes perfect sense to team her up with John Stewart in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow. While some fans might be disappointed that this version of Hawkgirl isn’t exactly the same one from the Justice League animated series, the best move for the DC Universe would be to simplify the complex history of Hawk characters and blend elements from different versions together.
Hawkgirl and Green Lantern Could Be The DCU’s First Major Superpowered Couple
DC Comics frequently pairs its superheroes in romantic relationships, and fans generally enjoy it. While exciting action, grand sci-fi ideas, and detailed world-building are important, they don’t guarantee a great story. Compelling narratives also need relatable characters, emotional connections, and romantic interests – the best comic books understand this.
The animated series Justice League and Justice League Unlimited showed how well a romance could work between Hawkgirl and Green Lantern. Expanding the DC Universe beyond just Superman’s stories is key to attracting a wider audience to a new cinematic universe, and seeing a likable couple like John Stewart and Kendra Saunders together on screen would be fantastic.
DC Comics has a history of memorable superhero couples like Batman and Catwoman, and Mister Miracle and Big Barda. Now, Green Lantern (John Stewart) and Hawkgirl (Kendra Saunders) have the potential to become another iconic pairing, and the new DC Universe seems to be setting the stage for a romance. Fans are optimistic about their future together, and with the upcoming Man of Tomorrow movie scheduled for release in July 2027, they won’t have to wait long to see this animated couple brought to life on the big screen.
