Man of Tomorrow Is Casting A New Love Interest For Superman (UPDATE)

James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie, Man of Tomorrow, has added a new cast member to play one of Superman’s love interests from the DC Comics universe. The film will focus on the arrival of Brainiac, a major villain, and will show Superman and Lex Luthor teaming up to stop him from invading Earth. David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult are returning as Superman and Lex Luthor, respectively, and Lars Eidinger will play Brainiac.

According to Deadline, James Gunn is close to finding an actress to play Maxima in the upcoming DCU Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow. He’s considering Marisa Abela, Adria Arjona, and Ella Purnell for the role, which is envisioned as a potential love interest for Superman.

Maxima, a powerful warrior queen from the planet Almerac, first appeared in Action Comics #645. Created by Roger Stern and George Pérez, she was initially presented as both a romantic interest and a challenge for Superman. Maxima believed Superman was the only being compatible enough to be her partner and father to her children, something no woman on Earth, including Lois Lane, could offer.

If the actor is confirmed, Maxima will be the fourth villain in the Man of Tomorrow story, alongside Brainiac, Lex Luthor, and Rick Flag Sr.

Reports surfaced in November 2025, through Nexus Point News and Daniel Richtman, suggesting Maxima would be involved in Man of Tomorrow. However, this marks the first time well-known actresses have been considered for the part.

Marisa Abela is recognized for her work in shows like Black Bag (as Clarissa Dubose) and Industry (as Yasmin Kara-Hanani). Adria Arjona, who played Bix Caleen in Andor, is a popular choice among fans to take on the role of Wonder Woman. Recently, Ella Purnell starred as Lucy MacLean in the Prime Video series Fallout, and previously played Jackie in Showtime’s Yellowjackets.

Okay, so there’s been some drama with the casting for the upcoming Man of Tomorrow movie. Apparently, Deadline reported who they thought was cast as Maxima, but James Gunn – one of the heads of DC Studios – jumped on Threads to say it’s totally wrong. He basically called Deadline’s reporting “shoddy and incorrect” and publicly called them out on it. As a movie buff, I appreciate Gunn setting the record straight, even if it’s a little messy!

I’m not criticizing Nexus – they’re just repeating information from Deadline. However, Deadline’s reporting on this is inaccurate and poorly done. I used to think they did solid journalism, but I’m disappointed in this instance. We would have immediately corrected those names if anyone had checked with us first. I’ve known Adria for years, ever since I cast her in ‘Belko Experiment.’ I admire the work of both Marisa and Ella, though I haven’t personally met them. It’s all quite surprising.

I was reading Gunn’s posts, and he mentioned he’s already revealed everyone who’ll have a significant part in Man of Tomorrow. Since we haven’t heard anything about who’s playing Maxima yet, it seems like she probably won’t be a huge character in the movie – more of a smaller role, I guess.

Man of Tomorrow is set to premiere in theaters on July 9, 2027.

How Maxima’s Inclusion in Man of Tomorrow Affects Superman & Lois

In Man of Tomorrow, Maxima appears as a potential love interest for Superman, creating a romantic challenge for him and Lois Lane’s existing relationship.

In DC Comics, Maxima has a strong obsession with Superman, relentlessly pursuing him for marriage because she believes he’s meant to be her husband and king. This fixation makes her a threat.

This instantly causes conflict between Lois and Clark. As a result, Maxima might see Lois as a threat in Man of Tomorrow and put her in danger, potentially trying to remove her as an obstacle or competitor.

The arrival of Maxima makes Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane more vulnerable, increasing the challenges she faces and adding complexity to her story as Brainiac appears.
