Man goes viral making heavy phone case to stop him using his phone

An Instagram employee designed a bulky phone case to help him break his habit of endlessly scrolling through the app.

People have been looking for ways to reduce how much time they spend on their smartphones for years, and it’s become even more relevant now that phones track and report on app usage and screen time.

Many apps and phones now offer features that limit your usage. These tools let you set time limits on apps, or even lock you out of them after you’ve used them for a while.

Content creator Logan Ivey has really pushed the boundaries with his latest creation: a massive, six-pound phone case made with a 3D printer. It’s so substantial, it even needs special screws to disassemble!

6lb iPhone case cuts screen time by more than half

On October 13th, Ivey, the creator of the matterneuroscience Instagram account, revealed a deliberately heavy phone he designed. He explained the concept was to make the phone difficult to scroll through and cumbersome to carry around, essentially discouraging constant use.

The case, which weighs six pounds, requires allen keys to attach and detach, and this can take a while. However, since he started using it, Ivey’s screen time has decreased significantly – from an average of six hours a day to about two.

He explained that he’s stopped carrying his phone around constantly, and even when he does, he finds himself scrolling less, likely because it’s more difficult to do so.

Ivey’s post has received nearly 500,000 likes from people eager to support the project’s Kickstarter campaign. Many commenters expressed interest in purchasing the product, with one writing, “I’d buy this!” Another jokingly asked, “Does it carry an iPhone 17 Pro Max? Asking for a friend.”

I’ve been reading the reactions, and it’s not all positive. Some people don’t think this will actually fix the problem – one person said you just need to take charge of your phone instead of letting it control you, which is what I try to do! Another one put it bluntly: if you want a simple phone, just *get* a simple phone.
