Man builds bizarre device to let drivers scroll TikTok by honking

A creative inventor has designed a device for cars that lets drivers enjoy TikTok videos using just their horn. It’s meant as a fun way to help other drivers who might be stuck in traffic.

Unnecessary Inventions made a device that responds to car honks, and shared a video explaining how it works. The creator wanted to make traffic less frustrating by turning honks into a way to control a TikTok feed displayed on the back of a car.

How the honk-controlled TikTok device works

The video showcases a clever invention for cars: a device with a tablet that plays TikTok videos. It has a microphone that listens for honking horns. Whenever a car behind honks, the device automatically advances to the next TikTok video.

So, to build this thing, the creator, Matty Benedetto, started with the guts of an old gadget – basically a circuit board that let you scroll through TikTok with a real, physical button instead of just touching the screen.

He connected wires directly to the button, which creates a manual shortcut in the circuit. This shortcut tricks the board into thinking the button has been pressed, causing it to automatically advance to the next video.

Next, a microprocessor and microphone were linked together. The microphone was set up to respond to loud noises – specifically, a car horn – which would complete an electrical circuit and cause the display to scroll, just like before.

To finish the project, we 3D-printed custom cases for the tablet and its components. Then, we added a strong magnet, allowing the whole device to firmly attach to a car.

It’s a different question whether the “Honk 2 Swipe” device would actually be legal to use on the road.
