A man in Japan, age 26, was arrested for holding a woman’s four parakeets hostage. He threatened to hurt the birds if the woman didn’t agree to meet with him.
Around 1 a.m. on February 7th, a man claiming to work for a company in Akayu, Nanyo City, Japan, contacted a woman in her 20s he knew through a messaging app, according to Livedoor News. The woman lives in the Okitama region.
According to investigators, the man then tried to coerce the woman into meeting him, threatening that her pets would be harmed if she didn’t do what he asked.
Parakeets taken hostage in a bizarre case
One message bluntly stated the only way to save the person’s parakeet was to return home. Another warned that four animals would die because the person found it difficult to refuse a friend’s request. The suspect then offered to spare the parakeet if the person apologized over the phone immediately.
Instead of reacting to the threats, the woman called the police. Officers arrived and took the man into custody, suspecting he tried to force her to do something against her will, before anyone was hurt.

After being arrested, the man reportedly confessed to the crimes. Investigators are now working to understand why he did it and what happened leading up to the event.
It’s unclear if the birds were ever at risk, but authorities have confirmed that all four parakeets are now safe after a suspect was arrested.
