Amanda Seyfried and Meryl Streep starred together in the hugely popular 2008 musical film, Mamma Mia! The film was so successful that a sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, was released in 2018.
A third Mamma Mia! movie has been in development since 2020, and now there’s good news: it’s officially confirmed! At the 2026 BAFTA Awards, NBCUniversal’s Dame Donna Langley announced that Mamma Mia! 3 is moving forward, and hinted that Meryl Streep will be returning for the sequel.
Langley has confirmed that a third Mamma Mia! movie is in the works. While there’s no set release date yet, she said they are actively discussing the project with Judy Craymer, the producer of the original Mamma Mia! musical.
So, everyone was wondering how Meryl Streep could possibly return in another ‘Mamma Mia!’ movie, seeing as her character died in the last one. I heard from the producer, Langley, that if Meryl wanted to come back, they’d absolutely figure out a way to make it happen. Basically, the ball’s in her court, and honestly, who am I to argue with a little more Meryl Streep on screen?
Amanda Seyfried, the show’s main star, mentioned in June 2025 that she was hoping for fresh, new stories, but also hinted she was open to returning for more episodes.
Amanda Seyfried Teased Who the Director of Mamma Mia! 3 Is
Amanda Seyfried recently mentioned a potential third Mamma Mia! movie during an interview for The Testament of Ann Lee. While director Mina Fastvold expressed interest in directing it, Seyfried revealed that Paul Feig, who directed The Housemaid, is actually taking on the project.
Universal Pictures hasn’t officially announced whether Feig will be involved. The first movie, released in 2008, was directed by Phyllida Lloyd and based on a screenplay by Catherine Johnson, which in turn was adapted from her 1999 stage musical. The sequel was written and directed by Ol Parker.
The movie Mamma Mia! centers around Sophie, who is getting married on a beautiful Greek island at the hotel her mother, Donna, owns. Sophie secretly invites three men from Donna’s past, hoping to discover which one is her father and have him give her away at the wedding.
The film featured a talented cast including Pierce Brosnan, Julie Walters, Colin Firth, Christine Baranski, Dominic Cooper, and Stellan Skarsgård.
The 2018 movie Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again tells the story of a young Donna – played by Lily James – and her summer romance with three different men in 1979, when she first travels to the Greek island of Kalokairi. Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgård played those men. While the film focuses on the past, Meryl Streep returns as the older Donna through a series of flashbacks, even though her character is established to have passed away before the main events of the story.
Mamma Mia! is streaming on Starz.
