Majority Of US Gamers Buy A Max Of Two Games Annually, Analysts Say

Most American gamers don’t buy new video games very often. Research from Circana shows that about 63% of US gamers buy only two or fewer games each year. In fact, over a third (33%) don’t buy a single new game annually.

Mat Piscatella, a senior director at Circana, recently shared some interesting data on Bluesky from their Q3 2025 Future of Games report. He noted that dedicated gamers who aren’t overly concerned with price are driving much of the activity, particularly when it comes to games that aren’t free-to-play.

Data shows that most US gamers don’t buy games very often. Only 4% purchase more than one game each month. About 10% buy a new game every month, and 22% buy one every three months.

For years, many people have believed that a significant number of gamers only purchase Call of Duty or Madden annually, which explains why those games consistently top US sales charts. But with the rise of free-to-play games like Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone, it’s likely even more players are now choosing those options, potentially increasing that group.

The release of the Switch 2 gave the US video game market a boost in 2025. But, according to data from July by Circana, young adults aged 18-24 are currently spending significantly less money on video games compared to last year.
