Steam, Valve’s platform for PC games, has become incredibly popular over the past twenty years and is now a key marketplace in the gaming world. A recent survey indicates that most game developers think Steam has a dominant position in the PC gaming market. However, despite this belief, companies continue to use Steam to distribute their games.
A recent survey by Atomik Research, called “The State of PC Game Distribution,” reveals insights from 306 industry leaders in the US and UK. The findings were shared through the PC platform Rokky, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz. The survey was conducted in May of this year.
The survey found that a large majority of gaming executives – 72% – believe Steam dominates the PC game market. They also reported that over three-quarters of their income comes from sales through Steam. However, a much smaller percentage – just 32% – said their companies continue to offer physical copies of games.
As a fan following the PC gaming scene, it’s really interesting to see where games are being sold. The recent survey showed that almost half – 48% – of companies selling on Steam also put their games on the Epic Game Store and the Xbox PC Games store. GOG is used by a smaller slice, around 10%, and even fewer, just 8%, are on Itch.io. But the really exciting part is that a huge 80% of those surveyed think they’ll be using more platforms alongside Steam in the next five years, which means even more choices for us players!
A successful launch on Steam can be incredibly profitable, particularly for smaller development teams like those behind games such as RV There Yet, Escape From Duckov, and this year’s hit indie title, Hollow Knight: Silksong. Steam recently revealed the 50 most popular demos from Steam Next Fest, showcasing a diverse range of games from both major studios and independent developers.
