After four seasons of the reality show Love on the Spectrum, Madison Marilla and Tyler White became the first couple to get engaged. They met during season three, and Tyler recently proposed with a festive “Christmas in July” celebration to mark their one-year anniversary – a nod to Marilla’s love for the holiday. He recreated the spot where they first met, complete with Christmas decorations and light-up reindeer. Prior to the proposal, Marilla relocated to Plant City, Florida, to be near Tyler, and she had a feeling a proposal was coming by Valentine’s Day.
Love on the Spectrum showcases the realities of dating for people on the autism spectrum. While past seasons followed individuals as they prepared for first dates and considered long-term relationships, the latest season shows couples from earlier seasons getting engaged and looking for a home, alongside new participants starting their own journeys. Season four demonstrates that the show is about more than just finding romance—it’s about creating a community and supporting one another through the challenges of dating. At a party celebrating Marilla and White’s engagement, cast members – both past and present – offered advice on topics ranging from first kisses to handling breakups.
The engagement party had a big impact on White and his music. He was particularly moved by a moment during the party – everyone singing ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ – and it inspired him to write a song about the strong bonds of friendship. He feels a deep connection with his fellow cast members, considering them like family, and wants the song to reflect that feeling.
Someone asked Tyler how he proposed to Madison. He explained that he knew very early on she was the one, but he didn’t want to get engaged too quickly. He decided their first anniversary, celebrated with a ‘Christmas in July’ theme, was the ideal moment.
Did the episode leave out anything from the proposal, specifically asking Brandon and Jenny for their approval?
I remember being at dinner with Tyler’s parents, and our families were all together. It was a bit strange when Tyler pulled my parents aside as they were leaving, but Tyler’s dad, Tim, was so kind – he kept me chatting about their upcoming trip to Alaska. He was really good at keeping me occupied! They talked for over an hour, and thinking back on it now, I get the feeling Tyler had asked my parents for their blessing. It all makes sense now.
You had the psychic sense!
MM: That’s an autism superpower.
When Tyler proposed, I was overjoyed – happy, excited, and truly elated! It felt like everything was finally falling into place. I’d started to suspect something was up back at dinner when Tyler spoke to my parents privately, and then he kept saying ‘forever and ever’ on our trip to Nashville. It was full of little hints!
I recall that even before I had a chance to kneel, she exclaimed, “I can’t believe it!” Madison, you already guessed what I was planning.
You know, I totally get that feeling of just knowing what someone’s thinking. I’ve always been surprisingly good at reading people, and I sometimes wonder if it’s connected to being on the spectrum – maybe it’s a kind of superpower! I have this incredible memory for details, like people’s favorite colors or birthdays. It’s almost photographic – I can still recall the names of kids I knew from the country club when I was little, years and years later.
TW: I have a song coming out on May 15 about how you read my mind.
When Tyler proposed to Madison, he was incredibly nervous. He described it as a huge moment – asking someone to spend their life together is a big deal. Seeing Madison cry actually made him tear up too, and he still gets emotional every time he watches the proposal video.
I was watching earlier, and I was really impressed, Tyler, you didn’t seem nervous at all. Madison, did you have any idea a proposal was coming that day?
Madison: I had a feeling something was up, there were a lot of little clues. They actually cut a scene where I was having lunch with my brother, who I live with. He started asking what we might do for our anniversary, and I even asked him if he thought Tyler was going to propose. He was just throwing out all sorts of ideas – he wasn’t sure if it was too soon, and suggested Tyler might sing to me or take me line dancing. My brother was just being silly!
He was trying to throw you off the scent.
MM: My brother had no idea!
I’m really excited about the engagement ring – it’s absolutely stunning! I especially love the red stones. I knew red was her favorite color, so I really wanted to incorporate that. It’s a princess-cut ring, which is perfect because she loves princesses – she’s my princess! When I saw the rubies, it reminded me of a verse in the Bible about a virtuous woman being more valuable than rubies, and that’s how I feel about her – she’s truly priceless.
You know, being on set is one thing, but celebrating my engagement with the whole cast felt truly special. It was amazing to share that moment with people I’ve grown so close to – it really felt like a family celebration.
That balcony scene where we sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” inspired me to write a song about friendship. I see our castmates as my chosen family – like brothers and sisters – and I want the song to reflect that bond.
Absolutely. I became really good friends with everyone in the cast, particularly Abbey, Connor, and Tanner. I also feel very close to Connor’s mom, Lise, and Tanner’s mom, Nicci.
I’ve gotten really close to Connor, Tanner, and Dylan, and when I see the other people on the show, I often think about how much we have in common, particularly relating to my autism.
How is wedding planning going?
MM: We are only getting started because we had to keep it a secret.
I want to establish myself professionally and be financially stable enough to support Madison. Once we’re both ready, we’ll begin planning for the future.
MM: We’re going to do premarital counseling with our marriage pastor, too.
Tyler, do you plan to DJ your own wedding?
TW: I may sing a song or two that I wrote for her.
MM: I think Tyler’s going to do his music for our first dance.
You know, everyone always asks what my dream wedding dress is like, and honestly, I’ve always pictured something straight out of a fairytale. I’m a total sucker for those big, princess-style ballgowns! Give me all the sparkle – lots of bling and layers of tulle, please! I even have a vision for my hair – I want it styled like Belle from Beauty and the Beast, with a tiara and flowers woven into my veil. Oh, and I’ve decided my bridesmaids are going to wear red!
TW: I’m thinking green suits and cowboy hats.
Someone asked if the cast would be invited to the wedding, and MM confirmed with a thumbs-up that, yes, they absolutely will be.
Someone asked if any of the cast members have asked me for advice on getting engaged, wondering if another proposal might happen on the show. I haven’t had anyone ask me yet, but I suspect it might happen soon. I have a feeling a few of them might be thinking about it.
