A beloved sci-fi action movie from 1979 is coming to the streaming service Peacock on January 1, 2026. This classic film, which launched an entire franchise, is known for its post-apocalyptic setting and thrilling action.
Mad Max is set in a dangerous, post-apocalyptic future where a violent motorcycle gang controls the highways. They terrorize people and openly defy the police. But they make a mistake when they target Max Rockatansky, a law officer. After they cruelly attack Max’s friends and family, he’s consumed by a desire for revenge, becoming driven by one purpose alone.
Mel Gibson became a star playing Max in the film, and it also put director George Miller on the map. The movie’s harsh and realistic vision of a future after a disaster became a major influence on science fiction films for many years.
Made on a tiny budget of just $350,000, the Australian film Mad Max became a massive box office hit, earning $100 million and breaking records for profitability. It also launched a hugely successful franchise, generating $623 million in total and continuing to be popular today.
Mad Max Is a Defining Work of Post-Apocalyptic Sci-Fi
Even without the famous tanker chase from the first sequel – the one that heavily inspired Fury Road and the character Furiosa – the original film offers something even more powerful: a compelling reason for its characters to keep going.
Following the hit film Mad Max, director George Miller and Mel Gibson teamed up for two more movies: Mad Max 2 (released as The Road Warrior in the US) in 1981, and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome in 1985. Miller co-directed the latter with George Ogilvie, and Tina Turner played a prominent role. The original Mad Max trilogy soon became a beloved classic within the science fiction genre, gaining a devoted following in the 1980s.
Man, it was amazing to see George Miller back in the director’s chair thirty years later with Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015! They cast Tom Hardy as Max, which was cool, but Charlize Theron totally blew everyone away as Imperator Furiosa – she really stole the show, honestly.
The character Furiosa, famously played by Charlize Theron, received her own prequel movie focusing on her origins. Anya Taylor-Joy starred as a younger version of Furiosa in the newest Mad Max film.
George Miller intends to revisit the Mad Max franchise. He has expressed interest in creating another film, but it’s uncertain if he’ll actually get to make it.
In addition to the movies, there have been two video games based on Mad Max. One came out in 1990, and another was released in 2015, coinciding with the release of Mad Max: Fury Road.
George Miller directed Mad Max, a film he wrote with James McCausland. Mel Gibson played Max, and the movie also featured Joanne Samuel, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Steve Bisley, Tim Burns, and Roger Ward.
Mad Max will be available to stream on Peacock on January 1.
