The upcoming movie SOULM8TE, a spin-off of M3GAN, has been removed from the release schedule and will no longer be coming out in January. Starring Lily Sullivan and David Rysdahl, and directed by Kate Dolan (who co-wrote the script with Rafael Jordan), the film was initially planned for release on January 9th. However, Deadline reports that Universal Pictures has decided to postpone it indefinitely.
The film SOULM8TE is currently being offered for sale to potential buyers. While initially connected to the world of M3GAN, that connection could change. The movie shares a similar storyline with the M3GAN film, focusing on a man mourning the loss of his wife who purchases a robot companion. Described as an erotic thriller, the plot likely involves a romantic relationship between the man and the robot. Given the events in the M3GAN universe, things probably don’t end well when the robot’s needs aren’t met.
The Future of ‘M3GAN’ Is Now Uncertain…

A chilling sci-fi horror movie arrived in 2022, but it wasn’t just the film that grabbed attention. A clever marketing strategy flooded cities with strangely lifelike robotic dancers, teasing the arrival of M3GAN. This new doll looked sweet and innocent, but she was powered by a powerful artificial intelligence, fiercely dedicated to protecting her child – and willing to go to any lengths to do so.
The movie, made for $12 million, was a huge success at the box office, earning over $181 million and setting the stage for future installments. Jason Blum from Blumhouse and James Wan from Atomic Monster recognized the talent of writer Akela Cooper and director Gerard Johnstone, and gave them the green light for a second film – one that needed to be even bigger and bolder than the original.
Released in 2025 with a significantly larger budget, M3GAN 2.0 aimed to blend more comedy and action into the story while reducing the horror. However, this approach didn’t resonate with audiences, and the film earned just over $39 million. This unexpected result made the development of SOULM8TE much more uncertain.
Back in October, producer Jason Blum stated that plans for a sequel to M3GAN are in development. While the potential spin-off SOULM8TE isn’t completely off the table, it might move forward independently of the M3GAN storyline. It’s possible changes could be made to ensure the two projects remain separate, but currently, everything is still just speculation.
Even without the initial marketing push of ‘SOULM8TE,’ the M3GAN franchise has potential, as the original film resonated with fans. The key is to recreate the balance between playful horror and genuine suspense that made the first movie successful. It needs to be both over-the-top and frightening enough to highlight the risks of relying too much on artificial intelligence. While similar stories exist, M3GAN has a unique appeal: she’s a deadly doll who’s also surprisingly charming and delivers her threats with a darkly comedic edge.
