In a recent agreement facilitated by Alpha Violet, a French-based sales company, Piece of Magic, a Belgian distributor, has secured distribution rights for the BAFTA-nominated film “Hoard” in France and the Benelux region. This British production by Luna Carmoon is recognized in the category of Outstanding Debut by a British Film Maker at the BAFTAs.
The movie received a nomination for the European Film Awards in the European Discovery Prix Fipresci category, and it contended in the main competition section of the BFI London Film Festival.
The film “Hayley Squires” was nominated in the category of supporting performance, both Joseph Quinn and Saura Lightfoot Leon were recognized for their joint lead performances, Carmoon was up for best debut director, Saura Lightfoot-Leon received a nod for breakthrough performance, Heather Basten was acknowledged for casting efforts, and Bobbie Cousins was nominated for production design at the British Independent Film Awards.
Earlier, Sunrise Films got the rights for showing the film in the U.S. and Canada, while Vertigo Releasing now controls the distribution rights for the U.K. and Ireland.
The story unfolds in London during 1984. Seven-year-old Maria and her mom have created a warm and cozy life for themselves by rummaging through trash bins and gathering valuable junk. However, one fateful night, their peaceful existence is shattered. Fast forward to ten years later, Maria is living with a different family. A mysterious man named Michael subsequently appears in their household, stirring up memories of the past, magic, and even madness.
I was brought to life under the collective guidance of Loran Dunn from Delaval, Helen Simmons at Erebus Production, and Andrew Starke at Anti-Worlds. Alongside their expertise, we also received valuable backing from the BBC and the British Film Institute.
The main actors are Saura Lightfoot Leon playing Maria, Hayley Squires portraying the Mother, and Joseph Quinn as Michael.
As a movie buff, I’m thrilled to share that this film boasts an exceptional creative team behind the scenes. The cinematography was masterfully crafted by Nanu Segal, who skillfully captured each scene with a unique artistic vision. Rachel Durance, an editor of great finesse, seamlessly pieced together the visual story. Bobbie Cousins, our production designer, meticulously designed and built the sets to transport us into the heart of the narrative. Nat Turner, the costume designer, brought the characters to life with his stunning and historically accurate costumes. Lastly, Jim Williams provided the film with a captivating soundtrack that perfectly complemented the on-screen action.
