Luke Macfarlane is swapping his actor role for a construction one in Hallmark+’s upcoming reality show titled “Home Is Where the Heart Is.” In this series, he takes on dual roles as both host and executive producer. The premiere of these two episodes will occur on their streaming service on March 20th.
Despite being renowned as an actor, Macfarlane is also a seasoned woodworker. In every episode of the new reality series, he enters a family’s once-magnificent house, either inherited or deeply cherished, that requires some tender loving care. Alongside designer Olivia Westbrook, their team strives to harmoniously merge the past and present, crafting a stunning dream home for the family that feels revitalized yet retains the warmth, emotion, and character that has filled its rooms for generations.
In contrast to regular home renovation programs, MacFarlane is not simply another host as explained by him and creator/executive producer Jessica Sebastian-Dayeh to EbMaster. A key difference lies in the fact that…
Macfarlane expresses that he identifies as a builder and creator, with woodworking being his preferred medium. However, he’s not fond of listening to eloquent, well-dressed individuals dictating what is good or bad. He believes there are plenty of exemplary instances on television that demonstrate this style, but he refers to similar hosts on TV as “renovation drag acts.
He explains the reason behind it – producing TV can be challenging with limited time, and there’s usually not much room for being excessively sweaty. However, he was determined to do so, particularly because this was the field he aimed to break into. With a chuckle, he admits that it might not be the most adorable thing, but he was fully committed.
In the TV show, the actor actively participates in renovation projects and crafts unique wooden items for each of the six families. There’s nothing quite as enriching as learning about someone through shared experiences rather than instructing them on what they ought to know.
“Home Is Where the Heart Is” stands out because it’s “emotionally driven,” Sebastian-Dayeh says.
She notes that what sets this apart is a distinctive element that truly shapes its uniqueness, serving as the primary influence. In my opinion, what distinguishes this from others, particularly for Hallmark, is that crucial component. We’re not merely hanging wallpaper; this wallpaper carries a specific meaning. It could remind us of the time period when the mother resided in the house, which, as history enthusiasts like myself and Luke, adds an extra layer of intrigue. I believe you learn more about it as you delve deeper into it.
She’s optimistic that viewers will find inspiration to celebrate their own families within their homes, which has been on her mind quite a bit recently due to the LA wildfires that destroyed many homes, including Sebastian-Dayeh’s. Despite this, she remains committed to promoting the show, doing so from a friend’s residence via Zoom.
She reflects on the deep insights she gained from producing this show, as well as the profound significance of a home. It’s heart-wrenching, and each day feels incredibly surreal. What it stirs within you is the emotional bond linked to a house, the memories enshrined therein, and the narrative it weaves about your persona in that dwelling. It’s so poignant because a home truly embodies where one’s heart resides, due to the memories attached to it. With Luke, we collaborated on a series aimed at empowering people to share their tales through design, and I am incredibly proud of this accomplishment. I am proud that we extended aid to those in need, and it serves as a reminder of the crucial aspects that shape our lives.
Although MacFarlane found it “certainly terrifying” to explore the unscripted realm, he’s thankful for having done so with Sebastian-Dayeh and optimistic about future endeavors in this area.
He mentions that it feels pleasant, and he’s eager to share other intriguing aspects of fine woodworking. He wants to demonstrate the construction process, as he believes there’s a growing curiosity among people about the inner workings of furniture creation and appreciating its value.
I’m thrilled to share that our new series kicks off with a double premiere, and from there, we’ll be releasing fresh episodes every week, exclusively on Hallmark+. The grand finale is set for April 17th – mark your calendars!
The phrase ‘Home is Where the Heart Is’ hails from Maven Creative Media, collaborating with Nikki Ray Media. The executive producers behind this production are Sebastian-Dayeh, Macfarlane, Mike Sheerin, Tanya Linto, and Megan Bidner.
