Luffy Loses No. 1 Spot in New One Piece Top 5 Character Ranking

According to the latest official rankings, Monkey D. Luffy isn’t currently the most popular character in Japan anymore.

The results of the recent One Piece global character poll are in. This week’s regional rankings show a shift in Japan: Roronoa Zoro has overtaken Monkey D. Luffy as the most popular character, pushing the series’ protagonist down to second place.

One Piece Announces Its Top 5 Most Popular Characters in Japan So Far

Sanji ranks third in Japan, with Trafalgar Law and Portgas D. Ace following in fourth and fifth place. Meanwhile, Monkey D. Luffy remains the most popular character in North America, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, Oceania, and throughout the rest of Asia.

The popular One Piece character poll, called “WT100,” is heading towards a big announcement at One Piece Day ’26 this August. The characters who rank highest in the poll will each get a new illustration from the series creator, Eiichiro Oda, and will likely be featured on new merchandise soon after.

Although Monkey D. Luffy recently dropped from the number one spot in the weekly WT100 ranking in Japan, the One Piece series is still having an incredibly successful year. So far this year, One Piece has been the best-selling manga, with 612,629 copies sold as of March 16th – significantly more than its competitors, who sold 194,752 copies. One-Punch Man Vol. 36 came in third place with 111,187 copies sold.

Fans won’t be surprised to hear that One Piece is reaching significant achievements in many areas, and 2026 is proving to be a landmark year. Next month will see the release of the animated adaptation of the Elbaph Arc, which is currently unfolding in the manga.

I’m still buzzing about Season 2 of the live-action series on Netflix! It was amazing seeing so many characters I love finally come to life, like Tony Tony Chopper and Nefertari Vivi. And honestly, the introduction of the Baroque Works crew – even knowing they’re villains (or become something more later on!) – was a total highlight.

Netflix’s One Piece adaptation has been a hit with both critics and viewers since its release. Currently, the second season has a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 26 reviews from verified critics. Audiences also love it, giving it a 96% approval rating on the site, based on over 1,000 user reviews.
