Three years following its initial announcement, and without any updates since then, “June & John” – Luc Besson’s covert production filmed during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown – has resurfaced with a bang (quite literally). EbMaster is privileged to unveil an exclusive trailer and posters for this upcoming feature, which seem to transport the French director back to the sleek, stylish filmmaking that originally catapulted him into fame.
The movie titled “June & John,” set to debut at the European Film Market in Berlin this Thursday, is being touted as an eternal love story. This upcoming production features fresh faces Matilda Price and Luke Stanton Eddy in the lead roles. Distributor Kinology has confirmed multiple distributors’ intentions to release the film in spring 2025.
The storyline, previously kept secret, unfolds around John, a young individual trapped in a mundane daily grind. His world is flipped upside down upon encountering June, an energetic and courageous woman. As a duo, they dive headfirst into a thrilling journey brimming with passion, danger, and self-exploration – a high-stakes chase (against time and the authorities) that infuses their existence with color, enchantment, and affection.
Or:
The previously unveiled narrative centers around John, a young man ensnared in monotony, whose life undergoes a radical change upon meeting June, a vivacious and fearless woman. In tandem, they set off on an exhilarating journey teeming with passion, peril, and self-discovery – a race against the clock (and the law) that infuses their lives with vibrancy, magic, and affection.
In the lively preview, showcasing scenes reminiscent of Luc Besson’s early works like “Subway,” “La Femme Nikita,” “Leon,” and “The Fifth Element,” but this time set against the backdrop of California’s sunshine (principally filmed in LA), we encounter characters popping pills in offices, SWAT teams breaking down motel room doors, armed women committing bank robberies while wearing a variety of vibrant wigs, at least one helicopter chase, and a car driving off into the sunset with its top open.
Filmed entirely using a smartphone during the pandemic, “June & John” represents a shift towards more budget-friendly productions for Besson, who has previously worked on grander, costlier projects. The producers claim this film allows Besson to revisit his original creative inspirations, adopting a gritty, personal, and resourceful approach similar to his early career. It also showcases the creativity and enthusiasm that characterized his beginnings as a filmmaker, while simultaneously evoking the spirit of innovation under pressure. The end result is a visually captivating and emotionally deep experience.
“June & John” was produced by Virginie Besson-Silla (EuropaCorp), in association with Kinology.
