„Lost so much confidence into who we are.” CD Projekt Red’s Pawel Sasko heartily summed up the story of Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty

Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty expansion launched on September 26, 2023, and, combined with the earlier 2.0 update, significantly improved the game after its difficult initial release. Now, two years later, as CD Projekt Red focuses on new projects like The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2, some of the team are looking back on that important turning point.

The game’s official X account shared a brief anniversary message, suggesting that some game experiences truly stick with players. Pawel Sasko, the lead quest designer for both the main game and its expansion, decided to mark the anniversary of *Phantom Liberty* with a more personal touch by connecting directly with fans.

With *Phantom Liberty*, we took a big risk, wanting to show our appreciation to our fans and challenge ourselves to create something even better than our previous expansions – *Hearts of Stone* and *Blood and Wine* set a very high standard. We felt we had a lot to prove, had lost some of our creative confidence, and ultimately rediscovered ourselves through the process.

For those who never lost faith, thank you.

While it’s up for discussion whether *Phantom Liberty* is better than *The Witcher 3*’s expansions, it definitely provided a satisfying conclusion to V’s story, offering a positive ending. It also allowed CD Projekt Red to rebuild player trust after a difficult period. We’ll likely see if they’ve fully recovered when *The Witcher 4* comes out in 2027. The developers have shown they’re reluctant to completely leave *Cyberpunk 2077* behind, so we might get a few more small updates before then.
