Samantha Bee has responded to criticisms from “Saturday Night Live” producer Lorne Michaels, who mentions her unfavorably in his upcoming memoir titled “Lorne: The Man Behind Saturday Night Live”. In an interview on “The Daily Beast Podcast”, Bee, a former correspondent for “The Daily Show” and current host of “Full Frontal”, commented on Michaels’ criticism by saying: “It’s not thrilling to be mentioned in a negative light in someone else’s biography that is expected to be successful.
In the two weeks leading up to Donald Trump’s inauguration as president in November 2016, Lorne Michaels’ biographer, Susan Morrison, conversed with him. This conversation took place a year after Trump had appeared on an episode of “SNL” in 2015, which sparked criticism from viewers and the show’s own writers and cast.
Michaels finds it challenging to make this generation understand that the show is impartial,” he remarks in the book (as reported by The Daily Beast), in response to the uproar over Trump’s hosting role. “We may have personal preferences and lean towards certain individuals, but we can’t be like Samantha Bee.
Morrison notes in the biography that Michaels used the term “one-sided and strident” when mentioning Bee’s name. However, Bee herself has since expressed pride in possessing these very qualities.
In essence, it’s like saying someone is forceful when your own success is based on amplifying the most boisterous individual,” Bee retorted.
Bee commented, ‘I’m cited in the book as someone that [Michaels] doesn’t want to imitate in any shape or form.’ I agree with him on that. I can be single-minded and outspoken, and I wear those traits with pride.
Though Bee found herself disagreeing with Michael’s critique, she harbors no resentment towards “Saturday Night Live.” In fact, she fondly recalls it as a delightful snack while growing up, dreaming of a career in comedy.
As a young child, experiencing it felt like a secret delight, she noted. It’s something that’s deeply ingrained in my mind and I cherish it. I have great affection for the performers, the writers, and their work. She continued, “I may not watch it every week, but over the years, I’ve certainly grown to appreciate it.
“Lorne: The Man Who Invented Saturday Night Live” publishes Feb. 18.
