‘Lord of the Rings’ Star Reveals the One Question Fans Want Her to Answer

It’s no surprise that Miranda Otto is often stopped by fans of The Lord of the Rings. She played Éowyn, a noblewoman from Rohan, in the second and third films of Peter Jackson’s acclaimed trilogy, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. Éowyn famously defeats the Witch-king during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. He boasts that no man can kill him, but Éowyn reveals herself as his killer, delivering the final blow.

Despite working on acclaimed films like the horror hit Talk to Me, as well as What Lies Beneath and War of the Worlds, actress Katie Otto says people rarely ask her about a particularly memorable scene from The Lord of the Rings. When asked by The Guardian what fans are most curious about, she shared:

Everyone always asks about the stew – specifically, how awful it was. It’s become a running joke, and people are fascinated by it. They want to know everything – what was in it, how it was made, and if the person who made it has improved as a cook. I think people find the whole situation really funny. I describe the stew in a lot of detail because I remember how much effort went into making it look terrible. For example, they even used bits of red cotton to mimic veins in the meat – they really went all out to make it as unappetizing as possible.

This moment comes straight from the Extended Edition of The Two Towers. Éowyn is giving bowls of stew to the soldiers, but Aragorn (played by Viggo Mortensen) can’t bear to watch them eat it. He tries to secretly pour the stew away while she’s not looking, and accidentally burns his fingers in the process.

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ Reportedly Looking to Recast Aragorn

New Line Cinema

There’s news about the upcoming film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, and it sounds like Viggo Mortensen might not return as Aragorn. According to Knight Edge Media, director Andy Serkis is considering other actors for the role. While the team initially planned to use technology to make Mortensen appear younger, they’ve apparently decided to find a new actor instead. The film will take place during the events of The Fellowship of the Ring, showing Aragorn’s journey to find Gollum, as Gandalf (Ian McKellen) instructs.

Screen Rant asked Viggo Mortensen if he’d be interested in returning to New Zealand to film another movie with Andy Serkis and the rest of the cast. Mortensen said he wasn’t sure, as he hadn’t heard any details about a potential project yet.

I really enjoyed playing that character and learned a lot from the experience. I’d only consider revisiting the role if it felt like a good fit for me now, considering my current age and everything. It just wouldn’t make sense to do it otherwise.
