LMU Announces Inaugural AI-Focused Innovators Film Festival (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned cinephile who has spent decades immersed in the dynamic world of cinema, I can confidently express my enthusiasm for Loyola Marymount University’s Innovators Film Festival. The fusion of technology and storytelling is a trend that I have been eagerly anticipating, and this festival promises to showcase some truly groundbreaking work from the next generation of filmmakers.

Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film and Television (SFTV) is launching the Innovators Film Festival for the first time, a two-day worldwide student short film event happening on March 27 and 28, 2025 at the LMU Westchester campus. This forward-thinking festival will display short films by student filmmakers from around the world, focusing on innovative technology in their productions.

The Innovators Film Festival is going to exhibit a selection of short films that demonstrate how cutting-edge technologies like AI, Visual Effects (VFX), and Virtual Reality (VR) are shaping the future of creative storytelling. To qualify, each film should incorporate technological elements during its creation, highlighting the use of AI, digital effects, or virtual production methods. The event will also offer enlightening discussions with industry experts, delving into the practical applications of AI in filmmaking, the integration of AI by major networks and studios in content development, and debates on ethical considerations surrounding AI within the entertainment industry. Furthermore, attendees can look forward to networking opportunities with representatives from leading studios and production companies, potentially opening up exciting prospects for career growth and connections.

I’m thrilled to be part of unveiling this festival, a testament to LMU’s foresight about AI’s role in ethical storytelling within filmmaking. This event presents an exceptional chance for students like me to immerse themselves directly and learn skills that will prepare us well for the dynamic world of entertainment, as it continues to evolve at a rapid pace,” said Dean Joanne Moore from LMU SFTV.

In March 2024, SFTV collaborated on the third Innovation Forum titled “Disruption and Innovation in Entertainment,” which drew over 200 prominent professionals and scholars from both the industry and academia. The gathering aimed to explore the ways artificial intelligence and emerging technologies are reshaping the entertainment sector.

Building on its dedication to integrating modern technology into academic settings, LMU introduced an innovative AI course this autumn, titled “AI in Content Production and Screenwriting,” led by screenwriting professor and Verified Labs CEO Justin Trevor Winters. This program delves into the utilization of AI for content creation, encompassing phases from conceptualization to dissemination. Moreover, LMU’s School of Film and Television (SFTV) and Loyola Law School will present “The Business of Screenwriting – Law and AI” in the spring, covering the intersection of law, technology, and entertainment. Topics will include ethical considerations for AI, intellectual property ownership, and groundbreaking distribution approaches.
