A new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) movie appears to be in development.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles began as a comic book created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. The series centers around four turtle brothers – Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo – who defend New York City from criminals and their main enemy, the Shredder.
Over the years, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have appeared in many different forms, including movies, TV shows, comics, and video games. One recent success was the 2023 animated film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and a follow-up movie is currently being made.
What is the new TMNT update?
So, I’m hearing from The Hollywood Reporter that Neal H. Moritz – the guy behind the Fast & Furious films, among others – is in talks with Paramount to basically reboot Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as a whole new live-action movie series. Sounds like they’re aiming for a fresh start, which could be really interesting!
According to reports, the studio is carefully reviewing its current and future projects. Unlike franchises like Transformers and G.I. Joe, Paramount completely owns the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) brand, having acquired it from co-creator Peter Laird in 2009, and is now focused on maximizing its possibilities.
This new project won’t affect the planned release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2, which is still scheduled for September 17, 2027. However, the spin-off animated series, Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, has been cancelled after airing for two seasons.
This new movie marks the first time the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be brought to life with live action since 2016’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, which didn’t perform well in theaters.
I was really excited to hear they were working on a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie based on the ‘Last Ronin’ comic – it’s such a cool, darker take on the characters! But unfortunately, according to The Hollywood Reporter, that project seems to be on hold for now. They said it’s been ‘put back in the pizza box,’ which I guess means it’s been shelved, at least temporarily. It’s a bummer, but hopefully it’ll resurface someday.
The project was originally planned as a mature, R-rated film, and director Ilya Naishuller, known for ‘Nobody,’ was being considered. However, the new studio leadership didn’t want the first live-action movie in a decade to be a violent, adult-oriented story. According to a source, the studio hasn’t ruled out revisiting the idea in the future.
