Whenever a classic animated movie gets a live-action remake, people immediately wonder if it was really necessary. This debate is happening again with the new live-action trailer for Moana. Almost instantly after being posted on YouTube, the trailer received a huge number of dislikes, making it impossible to miss the negative reaction.

What the Moana Live-Action Trailer Shows
The live-action trailer for Moana received around 64,000 dislikes in only seven hours, while it only got about 31,000 likes. This doesn’t automatically mean people dislike all live-action remakes – the How to Train Your Dragon remake from last year was generally well-received. However, these numbers definitely show that viewers aren’t happy with this particular remake.

I remember when the original movie came out – it doesn’t even feel like it was ten years ago! A lot of the online chatter about this new version has been about how they’ve brought the animated characters to life with real actors. Everyone figured Dwayne Johnson would be perfect for the role, since he voiced Maui in the first film, and I thought so too. But honestly, his look in the remake has been the biggest talking point, and it’s not all good. People are really divided, and I’m starting to see why.
Some commenters suggest there’s something artificial about Johnson’s look.
Something about his appearance in this photo doesn’t seem real, even though I know he’s in good shape and a large guy. It’s not just his hair – his whole body looks off.
I hope he enjoyed the process. I think his smile will really fit the character – it’ll look just like animated Maui…

Some critics feel his performance doesn’t quite fit the film, coming across as underdeveloped rather than a major contribution.
Dwayne Johnson stands out like a sore thumb so much that it looks like he’s acting in an SNL skit

This sense that the movie looks overly artificial extends beyond a single character.
The Story and World
The new trailer for the live-action Moana shows the film is full of magical and fantastical elements, which means creating it requires impressive visual effects. However, audiences are now more critical of effects that look artificial or rushed, so the bar is much higher for quality. This has also led some viewers to wonder why the filmmakers are using real actors when so much of the movie depends on animation anyway.
It’s so strange to me how Disney’s live-action remakes aren’t really ‘live-action’ at all! Basically, the whole movie is still animated, and they only use real actors for a few close-up shots. It’s kinda funny when you think about it!

What It Comes Down To
The first look at the live-action Moana suggests the movie will closely follow the story we already know, and that could be a good thing. While negative reactions online don’t always mean a movie will fail, this one currently seems to be facing a perception problem. That issue could get worse as clips from the trailer are turned into memes.

While discussions might focus on certain figures today, the real measure of success will be how well movies perform at the box office this summer.
