‘Little Prince’ Takes Flight As Stars Collective, Shanghai’s El Pajaro Team on New Animated Take (EXCLUSIVE)

In a significant stride towards animation production, the media technology investment company, Stars Collective, is teaming up with El Pajaro Pictures from Shanghai to create, manufacture, and disseminate a modern interpretation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s cherished classic, “The Little Prince.

In ‘The Little Prince,’ a young prince embarks on a journey across various planets, encountering peculiar inhabitants who provide symbolic lessons about human behavior. The narrative is shared by a castaway pilot, as the prince shares his experiences and seeks wisdom about life’s profound mysteries.

The story contained within this small novel has led to numerous interpretations. A live-action musical adaptation from 1974, helmed by Stanley Donen, successfully portrayed its enchanting spirit. On the other hand, Mark Osborne’s 2015 animated film combined CGI and stop-motion techniques, demonstrating that the source material still holds a certain charm, amassing $97 million globally, with $24 million coming from China alone. The initial book published in 1943 has been translated into over 300 languages and sold more than 200 million copies worldwide.

In my perspective, I’m excited to be part of a unique project that seamlessly combines the narrative of Saint-Exupéry’s life between 1940 and 1944 with elements from his own story. This innovative animation style merges traditional 2D watercolor artistry with a contemporary 3D oil painting feel. Li Jihong, who has previously translated “The Little Prince” into Chinese and seen it sell over six million copies, is leading this endeavor. He shared that the upcoming animation film will delve into the intriguing intertwining story of the author and his iconic work.

The project, concerning a Chinese animated adaptation of “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, has been granted complete approval by POMASE, the governing organization responsible for managing Saint-Exupéry’s legacy. In his endorsement, Olivier d’Agay, president of POMASE, stated that the idea to adapt the original story into an animated film had been under consideration by the Saint Exupéry family for quite some time due to the book’s popularity in China.

The deal further strengthens Stars Collective’s active approach towards acquiring rights. Established in 2020 by Peter Luo, this company has recently acquired options for “Fortune Sons,” a project produced by Oscar winner Donna Gigliotti (“Silver Linings Playbook”), and secured the rights to the bestseller “Leigh Howard and the Ghosts of Simmons-Pierce Manor.

Luo stated, “We aim to astound viewers by integrating advanced AI technology and fresh animation styles. Through our company Starlight Media, we’ve supported projects like ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ and ‘Marshall’, and this is another exciting step forward.

Stars Collective has recently made strategic collaborations. One partnership is with VFX company DNEG for creating immersive experiences in China. Additionally, they have joined forces with Hana Investment and Starlight Media to establish a $300 million fund dedicated to films, TV shows, video games, and technology. This portfolio features adaptations of upcoming movies like “The Garfield Movie” as well as projects from James Wan, Sam Raimi, and Jon Chu.

Medialink Animation International Limited is responsible for managing the licensing rights for the ongoing “Little Prince” production.
