Lisa Kudrow Says the ‘Friends’ Cast Only Met Together Once in the 17 Years Between Series Finale and Reunion Special

As a cinephile who grew up in the golden era of sitcoms, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of melancholy hearing about the loss of Matthew Perry. The character of Chandler Bing was not only a cultural phenomenon but also a source of laughter and comfort for millions, myself included. To think that the man behind such an iconic role is no longer with us is truly heart-wrenching.

Lisa Kudrow, who portrayed the quirky Phoebe Buffay on the popular NBC sitcom “Friends,” disclosed that the entire cast of the ’90s sensation didn’t get together until the show’s finale in 2004 and their reunion special, titled “Friends: The Reunion,” which aired in 2021.

On an episode of Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s ‘Dinner’s on Me’ podcast, Kudrow stated that it was only the second time since the end of the show that we had dinner together, which consisted of six people,” is a possible paraphrase.

Even though it had been a break, Kudrow mentioned that when the “Friends” cast – which includes Matthew Perry, Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, and Matt LeBlanc – gathered again 10 years after the series ended, she felt as if they picked up right where they left off.

“Just us at someone’s house and [we] had dinner, and like, didn’t miss a beat,” Kudrow said.

54-year-old actor Matthew Perry, known for his role as Chandler Bing on “Friends,” passed away on October 28, 2023. His death was due to complications related to using ketamine, which was later confirmed by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office in a toxicology report. Responders were initially called for a cardiac arrest at Perry’s Los Angeles residence, where they found him unresponsive in a hot tub. The acute effects of ketamine ultimately led to his demise.

In August, five individuals were apprehended in relation to Perry’s demise. Among them were two medical professionals and Perry’s aide, who allegedly exploited Perry by illegally supplying him with medications, as stated by the Department of Justice.

Aniston, Cox, Kudrow, LeBlanc, and Schwimmer expressed their deep sorrow at the passing of Matthew. Beyond being mere co-stars, they were a close-knit group, a family. At this moment, words seem inadequate to capture our feelings, so we choose to take time to mourn and come to terms with this incomprehensible loss. As days pass, we will have more to share when we are ready. For now, our thoughts and affection go out to Matthew’s family, friends, and all those who cherished him worldwide.
