Linus Tech Tips praises YouTube for adding “huge” new feature

Linus Sebastian, the creator of Linus Tech Tips, recently complimented YouTube’s new parental control feature. He believes the ability to block or limit access to YouTube Shorts is a significant step forward, giving parents more control over their children’s screen time.

During a conversation on the WAN Show about YouTube’s updated safety features, Sebastian pointed out that the platform now lets parents fine-tune controls for short videos without having to block the entire app.

Linus says Shorts control is a major change for families

The most important feature for me is definitely the parental controls. I can now specifically limit or turn off short videos for my kids, which is a big help. I’m perfectly fine with my children using YouTube, but I’m concerned about them getting stuck endlessly watching short-form content.

“Shorts are a different thing. It’s a different beast entirely.”

Sebastian drew a parallel between today’s worries about short videos and previous anxieties surrounding new types of media.

It feels like every generation goes through this same worry. First, people thought books were harmful, then radio, then television, then video games… now it’s short-form videos. I grew up with YouTube and I’m fine, but these short videos? They really will rot your brain.

YouTube has recently shared several updates and future plans, with its CEO, Neal Mohan, explaining their goal to create the best possible platform for creators while also addressing the issue of low-quality, AI-generated content.
