Linus Tech Tips addresses big worry about tech being “thrown away” after reviews

Linus Sebastian, the inspiration behind Linus Tech Tips, has alleviated a significant concern regarding his review videos by clarifying the post-review process of the products his team scrutinizes.

Over the past twenty years, Linus Tech Tips has become the preferred destination on YouTube for technology enthusiasts seeking comprehensive reviews and various video content.

Yet, there remains curiosity about the fate of the numerous items that Linus and his crew assess annually.

During an interview with Spencer Agnew from Smosh, Linus Sebastian admitted that it’s not uncommon for technology to be damaged or broken on occasions.

Linus reveals why some tech products get destroyed

In that January 15th chat, I clarified some fan theories, addressing one that suggested I toss everything post-review. But hey, who’d want to part ways with cool tech gear? That’s not my style!

He stated, “Some individuals may think otherwise, but such an action would indeed be quite foolish.” However, there are situations where we have no choice but to discard it, such as when we receive an engineering sample unintentionally exposed. It might be under the condition that it gets destroyed or returned for destruction.

He continued by saying that many companies go through multiple trial versions of their products, some of which are eventually ruined, prior to releasing the finished item to the market.

One illustration he provided was of phone maker OnePlus. They shared with Linus and his crew, during a tour of their factory, that more than 100 devices undergo rigorous testing and are subjected to conditions like being tumbled in a rock crusher and enduring rough treatment for hours.

Before selling any phones to customers, they intentionally produce and then discard numerous units. It’s quite standard to distribute some of these pre-production models for reviews, but keep in mind, those would eventually be destroyed as well,” he explained.

Instead, it’s worth noting that Linus emphasizes his efforts to minimize waste and holds on to items when permitted, with the intention of distributing them later among his team or for various purposes.

This occurs soon after Linus debuted on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon for the first time ever, stunning the host by unveiling several groundbreaking technological innovations.
