After a long wait, the fifth and final season of the hit show is almost here, marking the end of Netflix’s biggest series after nearly ten years. To make the ending truly special, a sci-fi and action star has joined the cast, and she’s now revealed that her character, Dr. Kay, is inspired by one of the most iconic villains in movie history – the same villain who was her on-screen rival in a previous role.
In an interview with Empire, Matt Duffer, one of the creators of Stranger Things, discussed the character of Dr. Kay, explaining she’s a government agent pursuing Eleven. He shared that actress Winona Hamilton will be playing a villainous role, a departure from her heroic portrayal of Sarah Connor in The Terminator.
She’s incredibly smart and can be quite imposing. While she’s a scientist, she’s also capable of defending herself, even with a firearm if necessary.
Dr. Kay appears to be shaping up as a relentless and unfeeling villain, much like a classic movie robot. According to what we’ve heard, she won’t be open to negotiation or empathy, and she clearly isn’t troubled by guilt or fear. Considering the past villains in Stranger Things, it’s certain she won’t rest until Eleven is defeated!
Linda Hamilton’s Involvement Is an Exciting Development for the Final Season of ‘Stranger Things’
Netflix
Bringing Linda Hamilton onto the cast is expected to be a big draw for fans. Best known for her role in the 1984 film The Terminator, she’s a science fiction icon, and her portrayal of a smart and powerful villain should be a highlight as Stranger Things concludes. Hamilton has even hinted that Season 5 of Stranger Things was a larger production than any of the Terminator films.
It took a full year to film just eight episodes, which is the longest I’ve ever worked on a single project – usually, films like Terminator or Dante’s Peak took about six months, but that’s rare now. I was really prepared to fully embody the character from the start, and they immediately threw me into my most important scenes during my first week of filming. I actually reviewed the schedule and was surprised they were shooting those scenes so early, before I’d even had a chance to truly find the character’s voice.
I quickly noticed that each day of filming involved really ambitious scenes. It seemed unlikely they were shooting complete sequences – with all the stunts, effects, and complex character work – in one go. I felt this way even on the first day, as every scene they filmed was incredibly large in scope.
The fifth and final season of Stranger Things will be released on Netflix in three volumes. The first four episodes will premiere on November 26, 2025, followed by three more episodes on December 25, and the concluding episodes on December 31. The returning cast includes Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, Brett Gelman, Cara Buono, and Jamie Campbell Bower.
