Lin-Manuel Miranda on Whether He’d Make a ‘Hamilton’ Movie After ‘Wicked’s’ Success: ‘If Someone’s Got an Idea, Holla at Me’

As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed the rise and fall of many cinematic masterpieces, I am both intrigued and cautiously optimistic about Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s plans for a “Hamilton” movie. While his work on “Wicked” and “In The Heights” has undoubtedly proven his knack for transforming stage productions into silver screen spectacles, the unique nature of “Hamilton” makes it a challenge that even the most daring directors might shy away from.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is not throwing away his shot to make the perfect “Hamilton” movie.

Miranda mentioned during an interview for his recent movie ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ (releasing December 20th, where he composed the original songs), that he’s open to it if a director presents an exciting idea,” is one way of paraphrasing the given sentence.

He added that we already have a fantastic adaptation of it, which was first shown on Broadway [and later streamed on Disney+ in 2020]. I’m thrilled that it exists and can be enjoyed globally. However, if anyone has an innovative idea, feel free to let me know.

However, with “Wicked” dominating the box office, Miranda acknowledges that she has been inundated with more queries about it.

Indeed, there’s a connection – the director of “Wicked”, Jon M. Chu, previously worked on “In The Heights”. This is the 2021 film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s initial Broadway musical. In 2008, the stage production where Miranda composed the music and lyrics, and even starred in it, was nominated for an impressive 13 Tony Awards, winning a total of four, including the award for Best Musical.

In 2015, the musical “Hamilton,” which portrays the life of Alexander Hamilton, a founding father, was Lin-Manuel Miranda’s long-awaited successor. Upon its release, it exploded onto the cultural scene as a true phenomenon. The show won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and garnered a record-breaking 16 Tony Award nominations, ultimately taking home 11, including Miranda’s first Tony for Best Musical Book. The music of “Hamilton” was a remarkable crossover hit; the cast recording spent 10 weeks at the top of Billboard’s Top Rap Albums chart and made it into the year’s top 10 on the Billboard 200.

Miranda expressed joy about living in this moment of victory, referring to the remarkable success of the “Wicked” movie. Featuring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, the film has broken records as the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation at the domestic box office, earning over $322 million domestically and $457 million globally.

“Honestly, that movie has been in development for pretty much half of my life, and the fact that Jon knocked it out of the park the way he did is so thrilling. I felt so taken care of. As someone who loves musicals, I was like, ‘Theater kids are getting their own “Lord of the Rings,”‘” Miranda added, referring to Chu splitting “Wicked” into half, with Part 2 set to arrive next November. “I waited a year for ‘The Two Towers,’ so everybody relax.”

As for “Hamilton,” I’m not in a hurry to transform it into a movie. I echoed this viewpoint during my conversation with Entertainment Tonight, stating, “A truly compelling directorial vision is needed to persuade me that ‘Hamilton’ could be adapted, as these tasks aren’t straightforward. ‘Wicked’ took two decades. It was a long process! We’re approaching our 10th anniversary for ‘Hamilton’ next year. So, let’s wait ten more years… I haven’t encountered a concept yet that would make it happen.
