Life is Strange: Reunion Brings Max and Chloe Together to Save the Series

The next installment in the Life is Strange series has been announced, and it will conclude Max’s storyline. Called Life is Strange: Reunion, the game picks up after the events of Double Exposure. Once again, Max is caught up in a puzzling mystery and must use her time-rewinding powers to uncover the truth.

Max is still in Caledon, the town where the events of Double Exposure took place, when she’s suddenly caught up in another strange mystery. Chloe arrives, and it quickly becomes clear she’s experiencing disturbing nightmares that could be something more than just dreams.

Reunion Continues a Saga that Shouldn’t be a Saga

The first Life is Strange game became popular because it let players make meaningful choices, encouraged them to explore the world, and delivered a powerful emotional experience.

I think a lot of us really connected with Chloe and Max’s relationship – it was amazing even if you didn’t go for the romance! Like the whole Life is Strange series, the first game was broken up into episodes with a lot of mysteries to solve, and even though some of the conversations felt a little awkward, I still had a blast playing it.

The main issue is that the first game concluded Max and Chloe’s story. Both possible endings were fairly sad, and fans heavily debated which one was the ‘true’ ending. Ultimately, letting players decide and live with their choice felt right, as it made that final decision even more meaningful.

It’s strange that they brought Max back for Double Exposure. It seems Max’s story wasn’t originally planned to be a long one, but became one because other games in the series weren’t very well-received.

Previously, fans were upset about having to choose one ending in Life is Strange. Now, the game is making both endings official – they both happened! Max’s actions in the ‘Double Exposure’ story brought the timelines back together, effectively combining the two different paths that were created by the player’s choice at the end of the first game.

Okay, so I’m happy Chloe’s alive and Arcadia Bay was saved, truly! But honestly, it feels a little…too perfect. The whole impact of the game came from knowing a real sacrifice had to be made, and now it feels like we’re getting the best of both worlds without any of the hard choices. It’s great, but it just feels weird that this totally ideal ending is now considered the ‘real’ one, especially so long after the game originally came out.

Life is Strange is Trying to Survive

While the Life is Strange games after the first one were decent, they didn’t resonate with players quite as much. A big part of what made the original special was its setting, characters who felt real even in extraordinary circumstances, and the heartwarming story of two best friends reconnecting after drifting apart. That first game had a unique charm that the sequels struggled to replicate.

Players were unhappy to see Max leave again in Double Exposure, especially since they thought it meant Chloe was still alive – but she wasn’t in the game. Although Chloe’s absence wasn’t the main reason the story felt weak, it definitely contributed to the negative reaction.

Following the release of several other games, including a second installment focused on Max’s story, it’s clear that the series relies heavily on the characters of Max and Chloe to remain compelling.

Life is Strange: Reunion could be a strong addition to the series, but it’s too soon to say for sure. The way the game switches between new storylines and the original characters, Max and Chloe, risks making it feel disjointed. It seems the developers are heavily counting on players’ fondness for these beloved characters. If that’s the case, Reunion might be a crucial turning point for the future of the Life is Strange franchise.
