On the closing day of AGDQ 2025, Dr. Doot, a speedrunner with a unique alias given his Ph.D. in music composition, stood poised under the spotlight. The weight of expectation hung heavy as he prepared to embark on a live run of Elden Ring, controlling the game using an unconventional digital saxophone. Conquering Elden Ring’s formidable bosses with standard tactics is already a daunting task, but Dr. Doot masterfully applied his academic expertise and swiftly dispatched not only the final boss but also Malenia, the frustratingly challenging optional boss.
In our conversation with user-named Dr. Doot, we discovered an intriguing origin story behind the saxophone speedruns. Contrary to assumptions that they were just another method for conquering Elden Ring or Dark Souls, these speedruns were actually a byproduct of Dr. Doot’s practice sessions on his electronic instrument, the Roland Aerophone.
He shared that the Aerophone, originally intended as a joke, turned out to be a game controller. However, he primarily used it for his music composition since he plays the saxophone. Upon discovering a program that converts MIDI signals from the saxophone into computer keyboard input, he discovered an unexpected use – playing games with it.
In simple terms, the Aerophone setup is straightforward and hilariously fun to use. The buttons on the Aerophone are assigned various functions for whatever game Dr. Doot is playing. For instance, in Elden Ring, only his character’s movement is controlled with a joystick at the back of the device. All other actions, like moving the camera and performing additional functions, are done by pressing keys and blowing into the mouthpiece. This action creates a “doot” sound, which is amusing on its own, but becomes even funnier when it coincides with dramatic sword attacks against powerful enemies. This combination often brings laughter to crowds, as was the case at the Wyndham Grand in Pittsburgh. Occasionally, he’s also accidentally composed new melodies during gameplay.
Occasionally, in the heat of my gaming sessions, something bizarre unfolds – I stumble upon an unexpected sequence of actions, and spontaneously play a snippet of jazz melodies out of the blue. It’s hilarious, and I’m often taken aback, thinking, “Wow, that actually sounds like music!
In various games, the Aerophone has been used in creative ways, like in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, where Dr. Doot synchronized the button presses for ocarina melodies with the keys on the Aerophone. However, it appears that exploring unconventional gaming uses for this instrument is becoming a focus, and he has set quite an ambitious objective.
Few individuals have managed to complete an uninterrupted, hitless playthrough of the entire Dark Souls trilogy consecutively. This refers to successfully navigating all three games sequentially without receiving a single hit during gameplay.
However, achieving his Mt. Everest isn’t just about reaching the summit for Dr. Doot; his ultimate objective is to conquer what the community labels as the “God Run 3.” This involves not only mastering the three Dark Souls games but also Demon’s Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Elden Ring – all without receiving a single hit. Few have managed this feat using conventional methods, making a saxophone run one of the most legendary gaming achievements in history if successful.
Despite several attempts, Dr. Doot has found it extremely challenging to master the shooter genre using his Aerophone instrument: particularly games like Doom 2016 and the third-person version of Resident Evil 2 remake. It’s been quite frustrating! Maybe someday someone will develop a first-person saxophone game, enabling him to conquer this genre at last. For now, his remarkable skill in playing some of the world’s toughest games using an unconventional method is nothing short of hilarious and impressive. And to do it all with thousands watching, both live and online, just adds to the awe-inspiring nature of his accomplishments.
