Leonardo DiCaprio’s new movie is still underperforming at the box office, even though critics and viewers generally like it. Recent numbers continue a disappointing trend for the film.
Okay, so I’ve been following the box office numbers, and it looks like this movie is struggling. While $140 million worldwide is actually pretty good – especially considering it’s an original story, it’s rated R, and it’s a long one at almost three hours – the studio is still looking at around a $100 million loss. Apparently, with such a huge budget, it needs to make $300 million just to break even. It’s a shame, because I really enjoyed it!
The film cost over $130 million to make, and another $70 million was spent on marketing it. Because movie theaters usually keep half of the ticket sales, the film needs to earn a lot more money to become profitable, and it’s facing a tough challenge to do so. Plus, according to Variety, Leonardo DiCaprio has a deal where he receives a percentage of the box office revenue before the studio does.
The latest numbers for *One Battle After Another* are discouraging, mirroring the poor performance of *The Smashing Machine* in theaters. *The Smashing Machine* experienced a steep drop in ticket sales, falling 70% during its second weekend and earning a total of $10.1 million.
According to Fandango analyst Shawn Robbins, these higher-quality films haven’t generated much excitement or a feeling that people are missing out if they don’t see them in theaters. He explained that they simply haven’t felt like special events. Robbins also suggested that moviegoers might be getting used to waiting to watch these kinds of films at home, particularly if they aren’t expected to be massive blockbusters.
This is probably happening because movie studios are releasing films for home viewing much faster after they come out in theaters. “Viewers now anticipate home releases much earlier than in the past,” explained Robins.
Whether Leonardo DiCaprio’s newest film will find success on streaming platforms remains to be seen. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, known for *There Will Be Blood*, the movie, titled *One Battle After Another*, features Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, and Teyana Taylor. The film centers around a former revolutionary forced back into his old ways when a corrupt officer begins pursuing him and his daughter.
One Battle After Another’s Rave Reviews Haven’t Helped Its Box Office Woes
The film isn’t failing due to negative reviews – in fact, it’s been very well-received. Critics love it, giving it a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences agree, with an 85% ‘Verified Hot’ rating based on over 5,000 reviews.
The film is being called a wild, exciting adventure packed with incredible action. Many are saying it’s Anderson’s most fun movie so far, and it’s receiving a lot of positive attention. Even though it might not ultimately make a profit in theaters, *One Battle After Another* is currently Anderson’s biggest box office success.
One Battle After Another is now showing in theaters.
