A new documentary from Leonardo DiCaprio is planned for next year, inspired by the classic 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz. The original movie, based on the first book in L. Frank Baum’s series, is widely considered a cinematic masterpiece, especially remarkable considering how difficult it was to make.
According to Variety, Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company, Appian Way, is creating a new documentary called Oz, alongside Chad A. Verdi’s Verdi Productions and Danny Strong. Tom Donahue (Mafia Spies, This Changes Everything) is directing. The documentary will feature previously unseen footage and explore the making of the film, as well as the reasons for its enduring popularity.
Judy Garland famously plays Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, alongside a talented cast including Frank Morgan, Margaret Hamilton, Billie Burke, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, and Jack Haley. The film had a difficult production with multiple directors before Victor Fleming took charge and received the most credit, and it’s known for having many on-set disasters.
During the filming of The Wizard of Oz, Hamilton suffered severe burns while playing the Wicked Witch of the West, and other costumes also presented real dangers. While details vary, Judy Garland generally had a challenging life, stemming from mistreatment during her early career as an actress. The Wizard of Oz ultimately made Garland a star.
The upcoming documentary, Oz, promises to reveal numerous stories about the making of the classic film. Currently in production, it appears the film will explore the movie’s enduring legacy, highlighting how challenging it was for those who created it. The Wizard of Oz went on to inspire countless viewers and filmmakers, but the production process wasn’t easy for many involved.
The impact of The Wizard of Oz is enormous, inspiring countless follow-up stories, adaptations, and new versions, particularly now that the original books by L. Frank Baum are freely available for anyone to use. Beyond films like Return to Oz, The Wiz, Oz the Great and Powerful, and Tin Man, this rich history ultimately led to the creation of Wicked, the incredibly popular Broadway musical that is now being adapted into a two-part film.
Now that Variety reports Oz is slated for release in 2026, the timing couldn’t be better for DiCaprio and the producers. The conclusion of Wicked will likely generate significant interest in The Wizard of Oz. Following the big story about the Wicked Witch of the West, it will be fascinating to see how audiences respond to a documentary exploring the origins of the original tale.
