Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese have been a successful filmmaking team since they first collaborated on the 2002 film, Gangs of New York. They’ve made seven movies together, with more planned, meaning they have a strong working relationship. So, if DiCaprio offers Scorsese advice that seems surprisingly old-fashioned, it’s worth listening to, no matter how outdated it sounds.
Leonardo DiCaprio, known for his upcoming film One Battle After Another (releasing in 2025), recently offered advice to Jennifer Lawrence during a conversation for Variety’s Actors on Actors series. Lawrence starred in Die My Love earlier this year. The two actors previously collaborated on the Netflix film Don’t Look Up and are set to work together again on a new movie directed by Martin Scorsese, based on Peter Cameron’s novel What Happens at Night. As this will be Lawrence’s first time working with Scorsese, she asked DiCaprio for some insight into the director, and he responded:
He loves to share movies as inspiration, often sending DVDs. If you don’t own a DVD player, you’ll need to get one. Sometimes he’ll show you entire films, but only to focus on a single scene or a specific element like the rhythm or mood. He might even use movies – like Japanese horror films – to help establish the right atmosphere. Overall, it’s going to be a really great experience.

Leonardo DiCaprio admits he doesn’t often watch his own films, but he makes one exception: a movie directed by Martin Scorsese.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese are bringing back their long-awaited thriller about a serial killer, and it looks like we might actually get to see it happen now!
Martin Scorsese is 83 and has been a filmmaker for almost 60 years, beginning with his 1967 film, Who’s That Knocking at My Door. It’s understandable he might not use streaming services – he’s earned the right to watch movies any way he prefers, and it’s great he still uses DVDs. Thankfully, DVDs are still available, unlike older VHS tapes. Perhaps, like Christopher Walken, he has DVDs specially made with streaming-only movies.
Wouldn’t it be amazing to be Jennifer Lawrence, getting to watch Martin Scorsese discuss his inspirations and even dust off an old DVD player? Hopefully, if her new film, What Happens at Night, is well-received, it could lead to another collaboration between Lawrence and Scorsese, with or without Leonardo DiCaprio. Speaking of DiCaprio, he’s already set to work with Scorsese again on a different project – an untitled crime film set in Hawaii, co-starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence have both been nominated for Golden Globes for their roles in One Battle After Another and Die My Love, respectively. Tune in to the awards show on January 11th, 2026, on CBS and Paramount+ to see if they win!
