LEGO is starting 2026 with an exciting new feature called “Smart Brick,” which will first appear in a new line of Star Wars LEGO sets. While LEGO intends for this technology to improve the building experience, some dedicated collectors are wondering if it will actually be a positive addition.
At CES 2026, LEGO and Lucasfilm unveiled a groundbreaking new brick called the Smart Brick. This single 2×4 brick uses tiny sensors to respond to whatever LEGO creation it’s part of, lighting up and making sounds. It works with new LEGO Smart Tags and Smart Minifigures to create interactive builds.
Additionally, it was announced that Star Wars will lead the launch with new LEGO sets that include all three Smart features.
LEGO Debuts The All-New Smart Brick (With Help From Star Wars)
In addition to the recently released LEGO Star Wars sets from January, LEGO has announced three more sets coming out on March 1st. Each of these new sets will include at least one Smart Brick, Smart Tag, and Smart Minifigure.
- LEGO Star Wars SMART Play: Luke’s Red Five X-Wing 75423 ($99.99) — Consisting of 584 pieces, the set will include a model of Luke’s X-Wing, an Imperial turret, transporter, and command center. Luke Skywalker and Leia will be the two SMART Minifigures, while the set overall will include one Smart Brick with a charging pad, as well as five Smart Tags for various interactive lights and sounds.
- LEGO Star Wars SMART Play: Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter 75421 ($69.99) — This 473-piece set features a model of Darth Vader’s TIE Advanced. Also featuring a Smart Brick and charging pad, the model also comes with a Rebel Outpost and an Imperial Fueling Station. Smart Minifigures include Darth Vader and one Rebel Fleet Trooper.
- LEGO Star Wars SMART Play: Throne Room Duel & A-Wing 75427 ($159.99) — Featuring 962 pieces, this final three-in-one Star Wars set includes three Smart Minifigures: Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, and Luke Skywalker, allowing builders to recreate the iconic Return of the Jedi duel. Other features include a brick-built A-wing Fighter and Pilot, two Royal Guards, and a SMART Tag-enabled turret. More SMART features include Lightsaber hums, A-Wing engines, and the “The Imperial March” theme with Emperor Palpatine’s throne. This set notably comes with two Smart Bricks as opposed to just one.
LEGO also hinted at more Star Wars sets for 2026 that will work with their new Smart Brick technology. These include updated versions of the Millennium Falcon, Luke Skywalker’s Landspeeder, the Mos Eisley Cantina, and an Imperial AT-ST, signaling a major push for Smart Brick integration within the Star Wars LEGO line in 2026.
LEGO’s New Smart Brick Is Designed To Enhance Play (But Is It Worth The Cost?)

This innovative Smart Brick LEGO technology is a significant step forward from the original interactive LEGO Super Mario sets, which debuted in 2020, and offers a really exciting play experience.
Even before LEGO officially announced the new Smart Brick sets, people were talking about them – and expressing concerns about the higher prices for fewer pieces. The impact of Smart Brick is already noticeable. For example, the new X-Wing model costs $100, but it’s much smaller than previous Star Wars LEGO models that cost the same amount.
The latest Smart Brick sets have definitely caught the attention of dedicated LEGO Star Wars collectors, including me. While they’re designed to improve the building experience for younger children, it’s still unclear whether this new technology will be a lasting success.
LEGO will release new Star Wars sets featuring its innovative Smart Brick technology on March 1, 2026. Fans can expect to be able to pre-order the sets on LEGO.com later this week.
