Batman is one of the most adaptable comic book heroes, successfully appearing in many different forms, even as a classic toy. And now, Batman is making a comeback in 2026, with plans for multiple new projects.
To celebrate the new LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight video game, DC will release a special comic book, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Comic Book Tie-In, on Free Comic Book Day.
This special LEGO Batman comic isn’t just connected to the new video game; it’s a celebration of the long history of the DC Comics hero created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane. As a tribute, the very first panel perfectly recreates the cover of Detective Comics #27, the comic where Batman first appeared.
This is just one example of how the story frequently nods to famous moments from Batman’s history in comics, movies, and TV shows. The plot revolves around Batman teaming up with other popular DC characters after he returns to Gotham City following a break.
Ivan Cohen wrote the story, and Paul Lee provided the artwork. Cohen previously worked on Batman as the editor of the 2001 graphic novel Batman: Gotham Noir by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, and later wrote an episode of the Beware the Batman animated series. Lee has illustrated several well-known Batman comics as well.
Fans can find the LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight comic book at participating stores on Free Comic Book Day. This yearly event, where publishers give away comics for free, usually takes place on the first Saturday in May.
The New LEGO Batman Video Game Also Celebrates The Dark Knight’s History
Just weeks after the release of the LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight comic book on Free Comic Book Day, players will be able to experience the video game that it’s based on. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is an open-world game developed by Warner Bros. Games, TT Games, DC, and The LEGO Group.
As a huge Batman fan, I’m really excited about this game because it’s going to show us a fresh take on how Bruce Wayne became Batman – letting us actually live through his origin story! And just like the Batman comics they released alongside it, the game is packed with awesome little references and nods to all the best Batman moments from movies, shows, and comics – it’s a total treat for longtime fans like me.
You can now pre-order LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Steam and the Epic Games Store). If you purchase the Deluxe Edition, you’ll get to start playing three days before everyone else.
If you pre-order either the Standard or Deluxe Edition of the game, you’ll receive a unique Batsuit skin based on the look from Frank Miller’s work this year. Players who have a Warner Bros. Games account will also be able to unlock a Golden Age Batsuit at launch, inspired by Batman’s very first appearance.
Gamers can get even more rewards when they buy LEGO’s new DC Batman sets. For example, the Batman Logo set includes a code to unlock a special Golden Batsuit in the LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight game. Plus, LEGO models of the Batmobile from Batman & Robin, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and The Batman (2022) let players unlock those vehicles in the game as well.
The comic book LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Comic Book Tie-In will be released on May 2, 2026, and will also be available to read on DC Universe Infinite that same day. The main LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight game will follow on May 22.
