If 20th Century Studios and Disney approve a fourth Avatar movie, a well-known horror director is prepared to step in for James Cameron. Their past films demonstrate they have the necessary talent to direct it.
Sigourney Weaver recently shared with TopMob that the future of Avatar 4 and 5 depended on how well Avatar: The Seed Bearer performed in theaters. Now that the film has earned over $1 billion worldwide, it’s very likely the studio will approve James Cameron’s plans to make the next installments of the Avatar saga on Pandora.
Avatar: The Way of Water centers on the Sully family as they mourn the death of their son, Neteyam, while a dangerous alliance forms between Colonel Quaritch and Varang, the powerful leader of the Mangkwan clan. This partnership gives the RDA a significant advantage in their conflict with the Na’vi.
After the Sully family defeats the RDA for the third time in the latest movie, and Quaritch seemingly dies, the conflict on Pandora isn’t finished. A well-known horror director has expressed interest in directing a fourth Avatar film if James Cameron ever decides to step back from the project.
James Wan wants to direct Avatar 4

James Wan is interested in directing the fourth Avatar film if James Cameron takes a break from the series. Wan is a successful director known for creating the popular horror franchises Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring, and for directing films like Aquaman, Furious 7, and Malignant. He’s also produced many sequels within those franchises.
In an interview with ScreenRant about Peacock’s The Copenhagen Test, James Wan expressed his desire to direct a future installment in the Avatar franchise.
“I have not done Avatar. Yeah, if you could put a good one for me with James Cameron, I’d love to take a crack at that,” he explained.
Okay, so James Wan clearly knows how to make movies people want to see. I mean, look at his track record – The Conjuring series alone has brought in almost $3 billion! Then there’s Saw, which made over a billion, and Aquaman hit that billion mark too. Everyone’s saying the new Avatar movies need to make a ton of money to be considered successes, and honestly, if that’s the standard, Wan’s the guy you want directing. He consistently delivers blockbusters.
This all depends on whether James Cameron truly intends to leave the Avatar franchise after the fourth film. He mentioned to The Hollywood Reporter in December that while he’d like to direct it, he’s hoping to find a way to collaborate with others, allowing him to pursue different projects as well.
He clarified that he wasn’t planning to resign as director, but he would be less involved in the day-to-day details of the work.
