So, Bruce Nesmith – you might know him as the Lead Designer on Skyrim – has been talking lately, and it’s fascinating stuff. He used to be a big part of Bethesda, but left in 2021. He was on the FRVR podcast recently, and he straight-up said that he and the whole team were genuinely shocked by how long Skyrim stayed popular. Like, they didn’t expect it to still be played so much, even now!
- In the podcast, they discussed how Skyrim is still extremely popular, even after all these years. Just yesterday, at its peak time, 26,039 people were playing The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition on Steam at the same time.
- Nesmith thinks it’s mostly because of how Skyrim’s open world was designed. It offers immense freedom and unpredictability, even if the price for that is a lack of perfect technical polish. As the developer explains:
As a huge fan, I always felt like *Skyrim* really revolutionized open-world games. It did things with freedom and exploration that almost no one has attempted since. And what I think was brilliant – and something a lot of game developers find hard to grasp – is that embracing that kind of freedom *means* things won’t be perfect. There will be quirks and oddities, and that’s okay! It’s part of what makes the experience so special.
Trying to eliminate every little flaw and bug can actually diminish the unique and exciting aspects of a product. Sometimes, we prioritize core functionality and accept minor imperfections, reasoning that the overall benefits outweigh the drawbacks. We’re willing to live with some less-than-perfect behavior if it allows us to deliver something truly special.

According to Nesmith, the creators of *Skyrim* deliberately didn’t guide players too much, letting them create their own unique experiences within the game. He believes this hands-off approach is still uncommon in modern open-world games, even though many are released each year.
