League Of Legends Introduces New Seasonal Model With Welcome To Noxus

As a seasoned League of Legends gamer with over a decade under my belt, the announcement of the new seasonal model has left me both exhilarated and apprehensive. The prospect of each year being split into three narrative-driven seasons based on the game’s regions is an intriguing twist that could breathe fresh life into this venerable MOBA.

For the last 15 years, League of Legends’ competitive play has only included seasons as part of its ranked mode, with minimal influence on the game’s storyline or events. Starting from 2025, Riot Games plans to overhaul their seasonal model to resemble other live-service games more closely, dividing each year into three distinct seasons. Each of these seasons will focus on a particular region in the game and tell a connected story. The inaugural season, launching in January, is named Welcome to Noxus.

The upcoming seasons in this long-lasting Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game, League of Legends (LoL), are undergoing a significant revamp, starting with Season One, titled “Welcome to Noxus.” Each season lasts approximately eight patches or 16 weeks. The majority of gameplay adjustments, modes, mini-games, and new champions will align with the season’s central storyline. In each season, there will be two battle passes available, resembling the current Event Pass in LoL, offering both paid and free tracks. Additionally, various reward systems throughout the game will be consolidated, with the free battle pass track gathering most rewards in a single location.

In contrast to adjusting reset times with each new season, ranked gameplay will maintain its traditional annual schedule, with only one big reset taking place in January. Players will get a chance to acquire a Victorious skin for every three seasons in the year, provided they win 15 ranked matches within that specific season.

Riot is offering a sneak peek at what we can expect when Season One starts in January, with the storyline taking place in the region of Noxus and its characters. Among these characters is Ambessa, the antagonist from Arcane who was recently introduced as a playable champion in the game. Additionally, Riot hinted at a Noxian invasion overtaking the traditional Summoner’s Rift map.

In Season One, we’ll witness a significant alteration to the Rift, as a new jungle boss named Atakhan will make an appearance once per game, around the 20-minute mark. The location of his spawn – either top or bottom side – will be determined by which team has inflicted more champion damage and secured more kills between minutes 14 to 15. Upon appearing, Atakhan will create a unique arena that will permanently modify the game’s map layout. This new boss can manifest in two different forms, each providing a distinct buff upon defeat. Consequently, other bosses like the Rift Herald and Baron Nashor may experience minor timing adjustments, with the former now appearing at 16 minutes, and the latter at 25 minutes.

In simple terms, Riot Games’ animated TV series based on the League of Legends universe, titled Arcane, concluded its second and last season this weekend. The widely-adored show is now influencing the game that spawned it. As of now, a visual and gameplay revamp for champion Viktor has been introduced on the PBE (Public Beta Environment) test server. This update mirrors Viktor’s appearance, backstory, and abilities with the character version depicted in Arcane.

Although “Arcane” has concluded, Riot Games intends to produce additional television series set in diverse regions within the “League of Legends” universe. Notably, showrunner Christian Linke hinted that upcoming adaptations will focus on the regions of Noxus, Ionia, and Demacia.
