Players of League of Legends are split on a recent change: Riot Games has added WASD controls to the game after 16 years.
Earlier this year, details about WASD controls in League of Legends were accidentally revealed, and players have been waiting for an official announcement ever since. While the controls weren’t available in the game right away, they sparked a lot of discussion, and some players weren’t happy about the potential change.
After a long wait, Riot Games finally released the new feature last week. It’s the first significant change to the game’s movement system in over ten years.
Players can now choose to control movement with their keyboard instead of clicking. While some people are happy about this change, others prefer the original controls.
League of Legends now has WASD controls & the community is divided
Players have mixed feelings about using WASD for movement. Some feel it creates an unfair advantage, as certain League of Legends champions would naturally be easier to control with those keys.

One player pointed out that champions like Janna can essentially just concentrate on avoiding enemy abilities while constantly protecting their teammate, without ever needing to move their mouse. Even Sona, who doesn’t need precise aiming, could “likely play with just a trackpad.”
While not required, many experienced players worry about the future of the game’s controls. They’re concerned that if using WASD becomes the best way to play, they’ll have to relearn everything just to stay competitive, potentially frustrating long-time players who prefer the original controls.
One player commented that adding WASD controls doesn’t improve the game and might actually frustrate those who are already used to the current system. They believe the difficulty isn’t with the controls themselves, and that making WASD the best way to play would simply discourage existing players.
I’ve seen a lot of mixed reactions to the WASD controls, but honestly, it’s great to hear it’s helping some people! One player said they always found League of Legends really tough to pick up, and felt overwhelmed by how much practice the mechanical skills needed. But they said after the WASD update, things finally clicked for them, and they’re actually enjoying the game now. It’s awesome to see something like this making the game more accessible.
I’m really excited to finally learn this game and put some time into it. I know it has some drawbacks, like lower damage output and slower attacks, but the better control and more comfortable gameplay are totally worth it to me. I’m thrilled I can now play with my friends and actually help our team win!
Some people believe switching to WASD controls could help new League of Legends players learn the game more quickly, and that simplifying the learning process is always a good thing.
