After Lay’s recently changed its branding, PepsiCo shared research showing almost half of its customers didn’t realize the chips were made with real potatoes.
This October, Lay’s, the well-known American potato chip brand, revealed a major update to its look. After almost 100 years, they replaced their traditional yellow packaging with a more modern color scheme and a new logo. The packaging also features a simple design inspired by old potato crates.
The company is changing how it makes its chips. By the end of 2025, chips sold in the US will no longer contain any artificial flavors or colors.
PepsiCo is now prioritizing healthier snacks for American consumers after a 2021 survey revealed unexpected insights about what its customers want.

Lay’s study shows fans forgot the snack’s main ingredient
According to a recent PepsiCo announcement on October 9th, over 40% of Lay’s potato chip consumers are surprised to learn the chips are actually made with real potatoes grown on farms.
According to Fortune, a 2021 survey influenced Lay’s recent packaging redesign. The new bags will showcase pictures of actual potatoes and other ingredients, such as limes, chili peppers, and onions.
According to Denise Truelove, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Lay’s, creating enjoyable snacks isn’t just about exciting tastes – it’s also about ensuring consistent quality from the source ingredients all the way to the finished bag of chips.
We created these changes based on what our customers told us, so you’ll have more options, clearer information, and a more enjoyable snacking experience. Lay’s is committed to remaining the best in the snack world, and we’re excited to continue that tradition.

Lay’s is making more changes beyond just one product! Their Baked chips will soon be cooked in olive oil and have half the fat of regular potato chips. Plus, a new version of their Kettle Cooked Reduced Fat Original Sea Salt chips will now be made with avocado oil.
Lay’s isn’t alone in completely changing its brand image. Just last month, Domino’s Pizza revealed a new, simpler design with sleek black and gold packaging, and now Lay’s has followed suit with its own rebranding.
