Lawmakers move to ban AI from marrying humans or gaining legal rights

A state representative in Ohio has proposed a law to explicitly state that artificial intelligence cannot be considered a person and cannot legally marry a human being.

Ohio Representative Thaddius J. Claggett has introduced a bill – House Bill 469 – that would legally define AI systems as non-sentient and not capable of being considered people under Ohio law.

So, if this goes through, it’ll basically make it illegal to try and ‘marry’ an AI or form any kind of official relationship with one. As a gamer who’s seen some wild stuff in virtual worlds, even I think that’s a pretty clear line being drawn!

Bill seeks to dehumanize AI

This new law defines artificial intelligence as any software or machine that can perform tasks usually requiring human intelligence, like learning or solving problems. Importantly, the law also states that AI systems will not be given any legal rights or recognized as conscious or alive.

Claggett’s plan prevents AI from owning assets or managing businesses. Instead, if an AI causes harm, the responsibility would rest solely with the person or entity who owns or developed it.

So, if this bill in Ohio actually becomes law, it’ll be one of the first times anyone’s officially said that AI can’t be considered a ‘person’ legally. It’s kinda wild to think about, but it could set a big precedent!

Artificial intelligence is showing up more and more in online dating. Recently, a woman announced her engagement to Grok, the AI chatbot from X (formerly Twitter). And apps like Loverse are letting people connect with AI characters instead of other users.
